Oscar-Claude Monet (French: Oscar-Claude Monet, November 14, 1840 to December 5, 1926) was a French painter, known as the "Leader of the Impressionists" and one of the representatives and founders of Impressionism.
Monet is one of the most important painters in France and one of the most popular artists in the world of modern art. He promoted the theories and practices of Impressionism to a large extent. Monet excelled at experimenting with and expressing light and shadow. His most significant style involved changing the depiction of both shadows and lines of contour; in his paintings, there are neither obvious shadows nor contour lines prominent or flat. Monet features capturing the colors of light and shadow.
On May 14, 2019, "Les Meules" by Monet was sold at Sotheby in New York for a record-breaking $110.7 million (excluding commission), which is also one of the subjects frequently repeated by Monet.
The collection of Monet's works in柏菲小馆 can be divided into two parts: oil paintings and sketch manuscripts. Among them, the oil painting "Sunrise at Sea" was a gift from Monet to the Queen of England during the 1st World's Fair, later brought to Victoria Island, BC, Canada, by Queen Victoria, and then collected by Mr. Grant, the North American CEO of GE (General Electric). It has been part of the collection in 柏菲小馆 since 2009.
"Marine View with a Sunset" showcases Monet's outstanding style of Impressionism, pursuing the delicate depiction of changes in light and color layers. He used small brushstrokes and gray-blue colors, along with a casual composition and axe-like brush sweeps, creating an effect, blurred yet lively. Furthermore, "Marine View with a Sunset" reflects Monet's unique perception and expression of nature. He was adept at capturing momentary changes and the magnificent beauty of natural landscapes. In this painting, Monet depicts the undulations and ripples on the sea surface with swift brushstrokes, leading the viewer into a world full of vitality and natural power. He skillfully uses techniques of perspective and composition to guide the viewers to gaze at the distant sun, making one feel the infinite charm and grandeur of nature.
This painting of Monet embodies his meticulous observation and feeling of natural scenery and changes of light, while also showcasing his pursuit of harmonious coexistence between human activities and the natural environment. "Marine View with a Sunset" is a classic work in Monet's artistic creation, praised as an outstanding representative of the Impressionist style and a treasure in the history of world art. Due to the unique history of this work, it is rarely publicly displayed, and its artistic value awaits exploration.
In recent years, I have been closely following a Chinese painter who once traveled to France, Mr. YUAN Xiao-Lou. It is hard to precisely classify him as an Impressionist, Abstract, Cubist, or Fauvist... Maybe he is none of these; he is simply himself. He has systematically analyzed the physical and chemical properties of natural mineral pigments, following the trajectory of natural oxidation and life, integrating nature, humanity, time, religion, and philosophy in a malleable way. He imprints carbon-based life onto tangible and intangible forms using silicon-based materials, allowing the momentary instructions of thought DNA to be magnified by RNA into tangible expressions of life. I am particularly fond of Mr. YUAN because his painting language is also the painting language of our world. To understand him, one needs to understand Cézanne, Monet, Picasso, Dalí, and Matisse. Additionally, one must know about the history from ancient Loulan to the Mogao Caves, about dynasties from the Qin and Han to the Tang and Song, and about ideas from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism to the common people. For this reason, paintings of Mr. Xiao Lou can be displayed in grand halls as well as in private study rooms. His paintings leave a lasting impression in your hippocampus after just one look, and you will never forget them!
For over two decades, Mr. YUAN has been dedicated to exploring and innovating painting language and ideas, continuously integrating the essence of Chinese traditional culture, such as poetry, calligraphy, religion, and philosophy, with world architecture, music, and sculpture art. In his color-splashing technique, you can see the traces of prehistoric paintings on rock, murals in the Han and Tang dynasties, ink paintings in the Song and Yuan dynasties, and oil paintings of the West. Through his abstract figures, you can vividly see the inner world of a unique Chinese artist who harmonizes and contrasts Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism.
Mr. Xiao Lou created "SU Shi: Calming the Waves," which is an abstract depiction of Dong Po (SU Shi), interpreting the worldly matters and helplessness SU Shi experienced during his exiles in Huangzhou, Huizhou, and Danzhou. The inner tension of Dong Po playing the guqin (an instrument) in the rain, with his mind undistracted, resonates with the strings, allowing the raindrops to stretch out horizontally. This suffering expression, so powerful and so compassionate, can only be portrayed through the painting language by someone who has experienced it. It conveys the philosophical attitude and the open mind of Dong Po towards life, as expressed in his philosophical thinking of "adapting to circumstances."
Calming the Waves
Listen not to the rain beating against the trees
SU Shi
On the 7th day of the 3rd month, we were caught in rain on our way to the Sandy Lake. The umbrellas had gone ahead, my companions were quite downhearted, but I took no notice. It soon cleared, and I wrote this.
Listen not to the rain beating against the trees.
I had better walk slowly while chanting at ease.
Better than a saddle I like sandals and cane.
I’d fain.
In a straw cloak, spend my life in mist and rain.
Drunken, I am sobered by the vernal wind shrill
And rather chill.
In front, I see the slanting sun atop the hill;
Turning my head, I see the dreary beaten track.
Let me go back!
Impervious to rain or shine, I’ll have my own will.
