Last night the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) announced that is expanding its capital campaign goal by 11 percent, or $55 million, to $610 million, in hopes that when it reopens in its expanded form in three years all visitors under 18 will be able to enter for free, among several other projects that will be provided for with the additional funds. (Currently admission is only free for children 12 and under, while students with valid ID are charged $11, almost two thirds of the full admission rate of $18.)
In addition to creating a special endowment through a $5 million matching grant from an anonymous donor that would ensure free admission for young visitors, the additional $55 million in capital campaign funds will enable SFMOMA to expand its social media engagement — a field in which it’s doing pretty well already — and ramp up its commission program for artworks in public spaces at the museum.
“We view this community enthusiasm as a testament to the fact that SFMOMA is committing to the potential of the city and region,” SFMOMA director Neal Benezra said in a statement. “The incredible response to the capital campaign among museum leadership and friends spurred us to increase the campaign goal so we can offer even better art experiences to even more people when we reopen in 2016.”
“The increase in the capital campaign goal is a reflection of our belief that we can develop even better access and education programs to share our passion for art with the San Francisco and Bay Area community for generations to come,” chairman of SFMOMA’s board of trustees Charles R. Schwab said in a statement. “We hope that people from across the community continue to join in our campaign and thus ensure that SFMOMA is open to everyone and remains a leader in collections and exhibitions, an innovator in arts education, and a pioneer in digital interpretation.”
