It has great visual impact and the characteristics of easel relief painting! Behavior photography, the artist is placed in a sealed bag with a vacuum pumped out, and becomes a living human sculpture, with single and double people, sculpture and sofa, the works are particularly expressive and unique in style!

Ambiguous Signifiers of Pleasure
Written by Zhuang Bowu
Material itself acts as a language, a union of the signifier and the signified.
Artist Zhang Yong uses polyurethane, a material commonly found in construction, as a medium for his work. This industrial material has a warm, pliable quality with the potential to expand and morph unpredictably, generating a unique pleasure from the ambiguous possibilities, both known and unknown, that arise during creation. Zhang’s work doesn’t simply convey a material “voice” or a purely physical presence; instead, it carries a psychological imprint of this voice, expressing a sense of personal metaphor through its sensory and textural layers. I often refer to such creations as “materialized” artworks.
With time, Zhang’s work has matured, its textured surfaces becoming reminiscent of fleshy skin with rich yellow tones. Through deliberate degradation and reflection, his pieces evoke themes of power, bodily harm, and mortality—symbols that align with the boundaries and interpretive possibilities of mixed media in contemporary art education.
Over more than a decade, exposure to temperature and humidity has caused slight but essential changes in the colors and textures of Zhang’s materials, achieving a fragile equilibrium that underscores the need for temporal validation when unconventional materials are introduced into the realm of artistic creation.
In our age of rapid technological advancement and AI’s meteoric rise, art confronts new possibilities and challenges. The ubiquity of smartphones and fragmented data has profoundly shifted traditional media’s authority, gradually sidelining paper and television. As an artist born in the 1980s, Zhang Yong is keenly aware of AI’s potential to transform human society. He explores this by generating AI images and then reinterpreting them through manual painting, a process of imitation and dialogue that he hopes will ease the anxiety and unease that carbon-based beings feel toward AI.
In Zhang’s recent experimental paintings, some resemble static “snow” from a TV screen with no signal or evoke off-air images with subtle gradients, expressing personal contemplation. Everything is in a state of image flux, a tension maintained by AI-based image reconstruction. This process is no longer bound to original artistic intent but instead finds the artist entangled in a dance with intelligent imagery, physically and mentally. Such self-tangling becomes a meditative retreat for the artist, both an escape and a comfort in confronting the pressing urgency of contemporary reality—an ambiguous pleasure found in signification.
