2025年4月20日,ONEART GALLERY 一个画廊于798画廊空间呈现艺术家胡雷个展“动静之间”。本次展览是胡雷在一个画廊呈现的第二次个展。展览将持续至5月19日。

On April 20 2025, ONEART GALLERY presents the solo exhibition "Between Motions" by artist Hu Lei at its 798 Art Center gallery space. This marks Hu Lei's second solo exhibition with ONEART GALLERY. The exhibition will be on view through May 19.

本次展览将首次展出艺术家胡雷的立体作品,以及部分手稿。展览将从艺术家胡雷90年代的动画生涯经历展开,呈现动与静、平面与立体、解构与重组的多面叙事。

This exhibition will debut the three-dimensional works of artist Hu Lei, alongside a selection of his sketches. Beginning with Hu Lei's artistic journey through his animation career in the 1990s, the presentation explores multifaceted narratives of motion and stillness, flatness and dimensionality, deconstruction and reconstruction.

中国动画经历了三个重要时期,60 - 80年代上美影动画艺术时期、90年代动画承制时期、2010年以后至今的国漫原创时期。出生于1968年的胡雷,童年经历了中国动画的艺术巅峰,90年代成为动画人之后,进入了当时上海头部的动画制作公司,参与绘制包括中央电视台、上美影、日本东京电视台、美国迪士尼等大厂的头部动画番剧、电影的制作。这个时期,胡雷参与了《西游记》、《足球小将》、《小美人鱼》、《宝莲灯》动画电影等诸多中外经典动画的制作。90年代的动画生涯,奠定了胡雷的审美志趣。

1987年毕业于上海华山美术学校的胡雷,学过剪纸、当过美术教师,在进入动画行业后,结合当时全球盛行的赛璐璐(Celluloid)动画制作方式,日复一日地海量绘制逐帧动画。赛璐璐作为早期的化工合成材料,透明度高,动画师将颜料画在背面,逐帧绘制角色动态,再与背景叠加在一起,由动画摄影机逐帧拍摄并剪辑合成动画。一般来说,动画人物想要运动起来,一秒需要12至24帧,也就是说需要绘制12至24幅人物不同运动状态下的赛璐璐,分别进行拍照定格。将这些定格照连续播放,动画中的人物就可以动起来了。这种动画制作方式,对于颜料的平滑和画面的整洁度要求极高,上色的先后顺序也至关重要。早期动画制作的工作习惯,也延续至胡雷的架上绘画,呈现出一种对整洁和秩序的追求。

Chinese animation has undergone three pivotal eras: the Shanghai Animation Film Studio period (1960s-1980s) representing artistic excellence, the animation outsourcing era of the 1990s, and the original "Guo Man" (national comics) renaissance from 2010 onward. Born in 1968, Hu Lei experienced China's animation golden age during his childhood. Upon entering the industry in the 1990s, he joined Shanghai's premier animation studio, contributing to flagship productions for global giants including CCTV, Shanghai Animation Film Studio, TV Tokyo, and Disney. His portfolio encompasses seminal works like *Journey to the West*, *Captain Tsubasa*, *The Little Mermaid*, and *Lotus Lantern* – projects that crystallized his aesthetic sensibilities during this formative decade.A 1987 graduate of Shanghai Huashan Art School with training in paper-cutting and experience as an art educator, Hu Lei became immersed in the prevailing Celluloid (cel) animation technique after entering the industry. This labor-intensive process required animators to paint character movements frame-by-frame on transparent celluloid sheets (12-24 frames per second), with each cel's reverse-side ink meticulously layered over background art before being photographed sequentially. The demanding technical standards – flawless pigment application, immaculate linework, and strictly regulated layering sequence – instilled in Hu Lei an enduring pursuit of cleanliness and order that permeates his current canvas works.

90年代,也是中国拥抱全球多元文化的高峰。海量的影片、艺术内容进入大众视野。学生时代就受解构主义和立体画派启迪的胡雷,早早在心里埋下了创作的种子。参与绘制94版《西游记》动画期间,26岁的胡雷一边绘制孙悟空,一边给自己和童年的好友们画下厚厚的分镜故事。彼时的胡雷,脑中构想的呈现形式是动画艺术影片。

The 1990s also marked China's cultural zenith of embracing global diversity, as cinematic and artistic influences flooded public consciousness. Nurturing creative seeds since his student days through exposure to Deconstructionism and Cubism, the 26-year-old Hu Lei honed his craft while contributing to the 1994 animated adaptation of *Journey to the West*. As he illustrated Sun Wukong's iconic adventures, he simultaneously crafted voluminous storyboard narratives for childhood companions – early manifestations of his vision to create animated art films that would synthesize his experimental impulses.

2002年,女儿的出生,让胡雷的人生转向。2010年,因妻子公职工作的原因,为了照顾好心爱的女儿,胡雷成为了全职爸爸。十年间,胡雷将照顾女儿和妻子放在首位,只在闲暇时间做一些创作。

女儿顺利考上大学之后,胡雷也从全职奶爸“毕业”了。而动画影片,也早已从赛璐璐的制作方式迭代为数字化绘制。重新提起画笔,胡雷最终选择延续钟爱的手绘,在画布上绘制脑中的构想 —— 这种重复、平静、原始的“慢”,给胡雷以身心的宁静。胡雷把上海的老房子,变成了工作室,每天从早上10点画到夜里10点,不觉疲惫。十年间积累的创作欲,成为了他乐此不彼绘画架上作品的动力。

胡雷的架上绘画,从中国式卡通肖像展开。带着回忆的色彩“滤镜”,通过解构再重组,每一张画布上的“分镜”,都带着动静之间的势能。中国经典动画角色如孙悟空、哪吒,往往带着中国式英雄的精神血脉 —— 抗争、热血、无畏。与解构重组的立体分形结合,带来一种奇妙的时空感、雕塑感。某些画作,让人联想起苏维埃雕塑的气势来。

解构再重组,是后现代主义的主要创作手法之一,而结合立体几何的象征,胡雷笔下的中式卡通增添了雕塑感、光晕感的英雄气质。这并非胡雷故意为之。在日复一日的卡通绘画中,中国式卡通的英雄气质早已融入骨血。

中式卡通(Chinese Cartoon)曾在上美影老一代动画人笔下,于60到80年代站上世界之巅。孙悟空作为中国式英雄角色,影响了许多全球创作者。在今天,黑神话悟空、新版哪吒电影的重新演绎,也在全球开启了新一轮中式卡通的流行。在艺术领域,90年代的政治波普、疫情期间的后卡通,都形成过一定规模性。在未来,只要动画艺术和卡通文化不死,中式卡通必然会不断诞生新的当代语言。

而历史并不需要宏大叙事,我们每个人本就在进程中。

The birth of his daughter in 2002 shifted the course of Hu Lei’s life. By 2010, due to his wife’s civil service career, he became a full-time father to prioritize caring for his beloved daughter. Over the next decade, Hu Lei devoted himself to his family, reserving creativity for fleeting moments of free time. After his daughter left for university, Hu Lei “graduated” from full-time parenting. By then, animation had evolved from cel techniques to digital methods. Returning to art, Hu Lei chose to stick with his beloved hand-painted style, transferring his visions onto canvas. The repetitive, tranquil, and primal “slowness” of this process brought him inner peace. He transformed his old Shanghai home into a studio, painting daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., fueled by a decade of pent-up creative energy. Hu Lei’s easel paintings begin with Chinese-style cartoon portraits. Bathed in nostalgic color “filters,” his deconstructed and reassembled canvases pulse with kinetic tension. Classic Chinese animated heroes like Sun Wukong and Nezha—embodying rebellion, passion, and fearlessness—merge with Cubist fragmentation, creating surreal spatiotemporal and sculptural effects. Some works echo the monumental vigor of Soviet sculptures. Deconstruction and recombination, hallmarks of postmodernism, blend with geometric symbolism in Hu Lei’s art, amplifying the heroic, almost haloed aura of Chinese cartoons. This fusion feels instinctive—the spirit of these characters, ingrained in Hu Lei’s bones through years of immersion. Chinese cartoons, epitomized by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio’s classics from the 1960s to 1980s, once stood atop the global stage. Sun Wukong, as a quintessential Chinese hero, influenced creators worldwide. Today, reinventions like “Black Myth: Wukong” and “Ne Zha”(2025) are sparking a new wave of Chinese cartoon culture globally. In the art world, movements like Political Pop (1990s) and Post-Cartoon (during the pandemic) have also made their mark. As long as animation and cartoon culture endure, Chinese cartoons will keep evolving contemporary dialects. History needs no grand narratives—we are all already part of its unfolding.

1968年生于上海,童年成长于宁波。1987年上海华山美术学校毕业,不久成为上海头部动画制片公司的动画制作人。艺术家胡雷的创作与他本人的人生经历与生活面貌紧密关联。90年代,胡雷参与了中国中央电视台94版《西游记》动画片、《宝莲灯》动画电影等经典动画的制作。胡雷的架上作品贯彻了其融入骨血的卡通美学和青春情怀。他在长期的动漫语言中提取了属于他自己的工作方式,在架上创作期间,艺术家通过打碎造型的边界,结合解构、分形等方式,引起一种连接时空、交织回忆的联想,唤醒人们的青春记忆。

Hu Lei (b. 1968, Shanghai) spent his childhood in Ningbo before graduating from Huashan Art School, Shanghai, in 1987. He soon became a key animator at one of Shanghai’s leading animation studios. His artistic practice is deeply interwoven with his lived experiences and cultural milieu. During the 1990s, Hu contributed to seminal Chinese animations, including the 1994 CCTV adaptation of “Journey to the West” and the animated feature “Lotus Lantern”. His easel paintings distill a lifelong engagement with “cartoon aesthetics” and “youth nostalgia”. By deconstructing forms through fragmentation, fractal geometries, and temporal layering, Hu creates visual portals that bridge memory and reality, triggering collective recollections of adolescence.
