The Gourd asa Paradise
Since ancient times, the gourd has been seen as an embodiment of "a universe within a vessel". Its form—a small mouth and a large belly—resembled, in the eyes of Daoists, a field of energy capable of containing heaven and earth. The mystical Master Gourd from Ge Hong's Biographies of Divine Immortals further infused it with a transcendent sanctity. Poetic lines like Li Bai's "When could I cast off my shoes, bid farewell to the times? Within the gourd, there is a sky of sun and moon" and Lu You's "Though small, the gourd holds heaven and earth; It accompanies my spirit across countless misty mountains" transformed this metaphysical idea into a livable, wanderable poetic realm—a tiny calabash containing the cosmos, a minuscule space reflecting clouds, moon, and vast distances. This was not merely literati fancy but also a vessel for the yearning to transcend worldly confines and achieve spiritual liberation.
Titled "The Gourd as a Paradise", this series employs oil painting to construct precisely such a spiritual dwelling. Within these works, the gourd becomes either a vessel inhabited by clouds and mist or a gateway opening onto an immortal realm, fusing mythical contemplation with the true essence of nature through light, shadow, and color.
Sunlit Mist Like Spilled Springlight interweaves gold, orange, and pink, as if spring light were splashed freely, immersing the gourd in a warm haze of lush, flowing brilliance. White Rain in Sky employs only black and white, allowing the oils to diffuse naturally; vines stretch with vigorous, expressive strokes, evoking the ethereal quality of ink wash. Evening Crimson Clouds captures the blazing glory of the descending dusk, while Wine from the Gourd shows golden light spilling from the vessel like radiant nectar, illuminating the world with clarity. Blushing in the Sun exudes vibrant exuberance, and No Dust Upon the Divine embodies serene detachment. Each piece offers a distinct interpretation of the "immortal"—manifesting now in resplendent color, now taking root in profound stillness.
The brushwork is not constrained by literal form, nor the colors by mere physical representation. Through layered buildup and fluid blends of oil paint, I strive to approach that breath of "transcending the material world". Dots, lines, and planes interweave dynamically, tracing the rhythm where vines and mist give birth to each other. Here, the gourd surpasses its identity as a plant, becoming a vessel that guides both gaze and spirit—a narrow gate leading from the visible to the realm beyond.
More than depicting an external paradise, this series seeks the "inner landscape" within every heart—that space which longs for freedom and transcendence. May you, while wandering before these paintings, momentarily forget the worldly clamor. Follow the form, the color, the very aura of the gourd, and step into a clear, expansive universe of your own within the vessel, attaining a moment of spiritual journey and a mind of serene clarity.
