In the Beginning of Chaos
The imagery of chaos in Chinese mythology is often embodied in the majestic narrative of Pangu separating heaven and earth. As recorded by Xu Zheng of the Three Kingdoms period in San Wu Li Ji, "Heaven and earth were chaotic like a chicken's egg, and Pangu was born within it." Then clarity and turbidity parted, heaven and earth began to divide, and all things came into being—this chaos is not emptiness, but the primal energy contained before all forms took shape.
This series, titled In the Beginning of Chaos, borrows the moment when heaven and earth first opened, when clarity and turbidity were about to part yet still merged, to contemplate the dawn and dusk, the waking and sleeping, of a lotus pond. Here, chaos is the pond veiled in ink-wash mists and soft, hazy light; it is the sliver of time between Xu and Hai, when darkness fades and daylight approaches; it is also the spirit with which the lotus blooms calmly between mud and clear water.
The lotus resembles Pangu standing between water and sky. Its roots sink into turbid mud, its flowers rise above clear ripples, and its leaves stretch into the interplay of light and shadow—as if, in its very breath, it silently performs a work of separation and purification: from chaos grows clarity; from darkness blooms brightness.
Thus, in this series, I seek to portray not the form of the lotus, but a vivid resonance and reflection between the lotus and nature. Layer upon layer of lotus leaves appear and disappear in the morning mist; water shimmers, blending green into the sky's reflection. Occasionally, a hint of red emerges, like hidden vitality quietly breaking through. Leaves sway in the wind, light shifts, shadows turn—everything seems to remain in the dynamic state of chaos just beginning to unfold, where stillness pulses with boundless life.
