Clear Ripples in Jade Water
Water has always carried a fluid and poetic resonance within Chinese culture. Those song lyrics titles connected to water—Silk-Washing Stream, Prelude to Water Melody, Immortal by the River—themselves ripple with a flowing cadence. Rivers nurture civilization and reflect the human heart. In poetry, water appears both in Zhu Xi's luminous vision, "A half-acre square pond, a mirror opened wide; Where sky-light and cloud-shadow linger and glide," and in Lin Bu's serene charm, "Sparse shadows slant across clear shallow water; A hidden fragrance stirs beneath dusk's moonlit quarter." A still pond is like a mirror, gathering reflections of sky and clouds, holding the glow of sun, moon, dawn, and dusk.
The lotus pond in my eyes is similarly clear and vivid. A summer lotus pond resembles a green symphony: layers of lotus leaves spread like a jade stage; when the breeze passes, ripples rise like music notes spreading across the water. The lotus pool forms its own realm, where time and space unfold within its clarity. Flowing water is unhurried, much like the passage of time, reminiscent of Wen Tingyun's line, "A thousand sails have passed, yet none are hers; The setting sun lingers, the river flows in quiet verse." The lotus grows from water, its life blooming within the flow. As Yang Wanli wrote, "The spring's eye is silent, cherishing its trickling stream; The tree's shade loves the water, reflecting the sun's gentle gleam." This clear pond silently witnesses the lotus's cycle of life—It is quiet, embracing, yet bears the vitality of continuous flow.
The beauty of the lotus pond is natural and poetic. Leaves stretch like green clouds reaching the sky; the breeze carries the lotus fragrance, dew drops echo clearly—this is the tranquility Meng Haoran once savored, and also the splendor Liu Yong captured in "ten miles of lotus flowers". Water constructs a translucent realm: cloud-shadows linger, fishing boats drift gently. Lotus leaves rise like emerald canopies holding up green reflections, or like cloud- ladders connecting water and sky. Leaves and shadows weave together in illusion and reality; jade water and clear light merge into one. Lotus floats upon the water, as if "all seem to swim in emptiness with nothing to rely upon"—This pond not only mirrors the world, but also forms its own clear and self-contained universe.
