Lotus Blooms with Every Step
"Lotus Blooms with Every Step" draws from the imagery of spiritual practice, suggesting that each place one treads is as pure and blossoming as a lotus flower. Most of the works in this lotus pond series were created over a decade ago, representing a sincere look back at the early stages of my artistic journey. With the exception of Emergent Mountains, Golden Pond, Lotus in Full Bloom, which was completed this spring, the remaining pieces are vivid testimonies to the emotions and brushstrokes of that time.
In those years, the lotus pond was not merely a subject for me, but a spiritual dwelling. From the eighteen white lotuses standing tall amid dense greenery in Fresh Lotus, Green Shadow, to the interplay of light and midsummer in Glistening through pointillist technique; from the quiet introspection amid the contrast of black and white in Ink Pond, Sparse Lotus, Clear Light, to the free-flowing colors in Playful Lotus Pond—each piece represents an inward journey, one step at a time, each step a lotus.
"Lotus Blooms with Every Step" is not merely about light romance, but more akin to the focus found in spiritual practice. The lotuses in my early works often captured a close-up perspective—flowers, leaves, water traces—all confronting the viewer with an unadorned vitality. The colors were rich, the textures surged, as if only through such intensity could the fervor within me be expressed. Yet beneath these full and direct compositions, the seeds of my later work were quietly sown: a deepening sensitivity to light, a growing awareness of structure, and a gradual expansion of perspective—from the focused gaze on a single bloom to the broader mood and atmosphere of an entire pond, shifting toward the use of "space" (jian) and the capacity of "stillness" (jing).
The tension of anticipation in Ready to Bloom, the dignified silence in Winter Charm, the tender companionship in Graceful Pair, the brilliance captured at dusk in Red Dress, Green Cup, Ripples on the Pond... Though these works span many years, they seem to flow along the same river of time. They document not only the four seasons of the lotus but also a period of growth shared between painting and spirit.
Now, compiling these early works into a collection is like sorting through a stack of letters from time itself. Each painting is a mark from a step taken in the past; each look back traces a path from chaos toward clarity. May this journey of "Lotus Blooms with Every Step" belong not only to the brush and the pond, but also reflect upon everyone who pauses here to quietly observe—amid the dust and mud, beyond the passage of time, we are all striving to bloom into our own lotus flower.
