Waiting for the Wind:Letting Nature Enter the Heart
Sometimes, you stand before the mountains, thinking of nothing at all — simply standing there.
The wind comes from afar, gently brushing past the treetops. Ripples spread across the water, as if slowly entering your heart. In that moment, you suddenly become still, as though something within you has awakened. It is not a sound, nor an image, but a feeling—something beyond words.

You can’t quite explain what it is,
but you truly feel that something is there.
Perhaps, this is the beginning.
The Chinese way of seeing the world is not rushed.
There is no hurry to judge, no hurry to understand,
and not even a hurry to express.
We are accustomed to waiting.

Waiting for what?
Waiting for the wind to arrive.
Waiting for that breath of qi to descend slowly between heaven and earth,
and flow into the human heart.
When qi arrives, all things come alive.
When it does not, even the most exquisite scene is nothing more than decoration.

It does not transplant mountains onto the canvas, nor does it simply paint water as water. What it does is allow nature to enter the heart, letting the breath of qi circulate and grow within, and then slowly take form.

When it appears, it is no longer the original nature,
but has become an ideal realm.
This is what it means for nature to enter the heart.
There is no shortcut on this path.
It is neither an accumulation of techniques nor a patchwork of experience.
It is more like planting a tree — you cannot see what happens beneath the ground, yet one day, it will grow naturally.
From object to feeling, from feeling to the heart, from the heart to form.
Nature enters the body, settles, transforms, grows within, and ultimately emerges in an entirely new way.

Without going through wind and rain, it is hard to see a rainbow.
Calligraphy was the first to fully express this truth.
Looking across the development of calligraphy, one can see the flow and transformation of qi within it.

With each stroke, you think you are writing words, but in truth, you are breathing.
Light is an inhale; heavy is an exhale.
A pause is the turning of qi; movement is the flow of qi.
When it flows, the entire page comes alive.
When it does not, no matter how beautiful it looks, it is only form.
In the end, the characters themselves no longer matter.

What remains is the movement of a single breath of qi,
a trace that a person once existed.
In the contemporary era, Xu Bing did something profoundly meaningful —

山,不再只是山,而是一种可进入的境;
He made characters unreadable.
You cannot read them, yet you are drawn in.
You do not know what they say, but you sense that something is “happening.”
With this step, calligraphy moved from “reading” to “feeling,”
and from China to the world.
If calligraphy turns qi into line,
then painting turns qi into a space in which it can dwell.
Chinese painting has never sought to replicate nature.
It is more like the reconstruction of a world.
Mountains are no longer merely mountains, but realms one can enter;
water is no longer merely water, but a flow of time.
You stand before a painting, at first you are looking.
But as you keep looking, you are no longer just looking — you have entered it.
The mountains of Jia Youfu seem to have grown from within.

Thick, weighty, and quiet — as if growing from deep within the earth, yet also as if observing all things from a great height.
He is not painting mountains; he is allowing the mountains to enter the heart.
Zao Wou-Ki went a step further.
![]()
He no longer even retains the form of mountains, but directly presents a sense of “being.”
It is a space, a force, a flowing of time and breath.
You cannot define it, yet you are willing to remain within it.
Ding Shaoguang, on the other hand, is like opening a door.
![]()
He makes images easier to enter, giving the world an entry point, and in doing so, gradually draws us closer to the spiritual realm of the East.
It is not only in painting.
Within sound, too, there is this breath of qi.
Tan Dun lets water give voice, allowing nature to enter time. What you hear is not just music, but nature in motion.
![]()
The same is true within the body.
Bruce Lee integrated his understanding of nature into the body, turning movement into a channel through which qi flows in an instant. In that moment, body and spirit become one.
![]()
And so, everything begins to become clear:
Calligraphy is qi within line.
Painting is qi within form.
Music is qi within time.
Martial arts is qi within the body.
They may appear different, yet they share the same origin.
They are all engaged in the same task —
to let nature enter the human,
and then, through the human, give rise to a world.
But here, too, lies the problem.
The world has seen Chinese art, yet often remains on the surface.
It sees the forms, the styles, the sense of the East,
but does not truly touch that breath of qi.
And so, at times, it becomes decoration, a label, something merely “beautiful.”
But it was never meant to be just “beautiful.”
It is a living structure.
Therefore, what truly needs to be done today is not to replicate tradition, nor to pursue simple innovation,

but to regenerate it —
to allow it to continue unfolding in the present.
In this context, the exploration of new color-ink painting and marker drawing is not merely a change of materials, but the continued growth of a language.
New color-ink painting is no longer just about color.

Color begins to flow, to breathe, to permeate and intertwine.
The surface is no longer filled—it is being generated.
You are not coloring; you are watching it grow.
Marker drawing, by contrast, is more direct.

Through layers of accumulation, a rhythm naturally takes shape.
There is no preset plan — only unfolding.
As you continue, the image begins to reveal itself.
At that moment, you realize —
you are not controlling the image,
you are participating in its growth.
A painting is not something completed.
It is something that grows.
This is regeneration.
And also, a way forward.
From nature to inner vision, this path has always existed.
At times it is overlooked, at times obscured —
but it has never disappeared.
It is always there, waiting for you.
Waiting for the wind to arrive.
Waiting for that moment — when nature enters the heart, and the heart begins to grow.
One day, when someone stands before a painting,
without the need for explanation, without the need for language,
simply gazing quietly, yet able to feel that flowing breath of qi —
in that moment,
everything has already happened.
Only then is Chinese art truly touched by the world —
not merely seen,
but felt.
