  张桂铭毕业于浙江美术学院,扎实的传统功底为他的创新奠定了深厚的基础。也许他认为构图上洋味较浓,因而在笔墨上刻意追求十足的中国味,用笔奔放、凝重,使得粗细、干湿、枯润交相辉映。他的用墨更独具一格,一笔下去,焦墨、淡墨同时落纸,焦墨笔痕清晰,淡墨从焦墨两侧渗出优雅的墨晕,有一种水印木刻的韵味,就这笔墨足以沁透出江南画风的魅力。色彩的艳丽更使得张桂铭的画引人注目。他采用民间艺术填彩的方法,但不刻板,时时露出他的狡黠。《盛夏》中的荷叶时以蓝、浅青、淡绿等同类色交错填入,偶尔露出几块空白,看似漫不经心,实是惨淡经营,造成一种轻灵剔透的镶嵌效果;而在荷花上只是用淡红色沿上部轮廓轻轻一勾;却将整只莲蓬涂满绿色。简简单单的几种不同的设色方法,足见画家的灵气所在。

  他画里的荷塘、游鱼、女人、鲜花,都不是黑夜梦境里的超现实主义形象,而切切实实来自他童年绍兴水乡的生活经验,是这种经验的艺术外化。张桂铭那种平涂的称得上斑斓的色彩,更不是米罗色彩世界的翻版,其灵感实实在在地来自绍兴乡间的节日喜庆的色彩气氛。让观者可以从这种明朗、鲜亮、充满喧闹的色彩中,领略高亢的绍兴大板掠过鉴湖水面时的精神振奋的感觉。
