Words from Heart
--Pointing to Wang Yiqiong
by Huang Fan
We are used to the expression indicating the conflict between the artist and the reality so as to interpret his development trajectory, but for his anxiety about the reality, we have no psychological preparation. I assume that Wang Yiqiong probably hopes to use what Rodin called “the hand of God” to eliminate this fantasy of conflict, with great ambitions, they call themselves the poetic two parties who should be parting, eternal and conflicting. In his arcane and tranquil personal world, reality is no long the specific world, but contradictory individuals. We should not underestimate its role in creating magic. Although Wang does not make any promise to the reality, he has expressed his attempt in all his works to adaption. His words are no long the self-abandonment of evil ideas, but rather his attempt to turn the individual illusion captured from the reality into the remote pre-existence and after-world.
In his early copper plate engravings, we can see the detailed the lines freed like floating clouds and silk threads which seem to pass an eternal desire, so that they will not collapse in the volatile world. These engravings seemed to make preparations for his later masterpiece—Chinese Lovers, seemed to express that those who should be afraid of the reality are not us, but the time.
Wang Yiqiong’s artistic career has experienced three periods: copper plate engraving, conceptual photographing and multi-color woodblock print. What touches me most is the recent graphic art series of Chinese Lovers. I don’t think that the period of conceptual photographing is the interrupt of his graphic arts, the umbilical cord running through all the three periods has been existing all the time, that is the loneliness, the loneliness generated in the coldness from the anxiety. In the copper plate engraving period, there was a sense of helplessness, and it seemed that one would enter a deserted world. In the hectic photographing period, loneliness became a self-saving activity which turned the august past into the secular world through making of ancient poems, so at to get the hearts closer. In the recent multi-color woodblock printing period, loneliness loomed in the hedonism, and loneliness erupted painfully behind the carnival. Jollification does not mean the disappearance of loneliness, loneliness has become a angelical imago, it will appear in a kind and even languid manner, and it deals with the fast changing world quietly and tries to get along with it. In the graphic art series of Chinese Lovers, Wang has turn the loneliness from the early to a fun of loneliness, making it unforgettable. With his works, graphic arts seem to have entered a new era.
