八卦钱主要用于镇宅院、保平安、祛病邪、巫术占卜等。据说八卦钱在清朝道光年间兴盛，用于修建殿堂时放置梁上，辟妖邪、祈福祥。自道光至清朝灭亡，民间人们为避兵乱、镇妖害，在建房时上梁时，也放置八卦钱。清王朝灭亡之后，主要用于巫术占卜了。

花钱源于汉，兴于魏晋，鼎盛在明清。花钱是中国古钱币的分支，是中国民间自娱自乐的一种玩钱，这种钱币由于不是流通钱，因此它的材质大都比较粗糙，中国民间把这种钱俗称为“花钱”。“花钱”虽然具有钱币的形态，但不作流通使用，是钱币中的“非正用品”。

八卦钱，实为天干地支钱，在厌胜钱家族中占有很大的比重，从东汉到明清皆有铸造，且有代代仿制几代同类的，相传民间有“一个铜八卦胜过五十钱”的说法，因其铸造量少，多藏在宝塔地宫，凡年代越久远，属首版开炉钱更是罕见。八卦源于易经，又比八卦钱早得多，“易更三圣”所指的是一圣伏羲氏、二圣周文王姬昌、三圣孔子，这是创编易经的始祖，可见由来久远。八卦本是悬挂的意思，悬挂八种象征自然的符号。符号是由三道平行横线、利用横线中央断与不断的变化组合成八组：
