What roles are you playing? What factors influenced your choice of roles? How far are they from who you really are?

Throughout our life time we are framed in certain roles. In childhood, there are colors we are expected to like and toys to choose. Later, the behavior our parents await from us and hobbies they think suit us create certain social circles around us that shape personality and define our social roles. Mostly, we conform to the guidelines provided by the roles we perform, we look for appreciation and hope to be perceived in a certain way.  We follow behavior patterns that are considered to be the norm by our social circles and we rarely ask ourselves questions like “Do I want to do what I’m doing?” “Am I living a happy life?”

Mumuko’s idea to change her life from a very organized, hard-working Japanese young woman into a wandering artist might seem quite extreme, but at the same time very intriguing. We started going through her photo stories and I could see that she is curious; she photographs different people, explores and follows their personal development to see how they perform their role. When she told me about her lifestyle saying that she has no plans and follows her destiny, the first question I asked myself was “could I do it?” We try on different roles to understand what suits us and I believe this became a main purpose of the exhibition: to show that there is a choice.

Mumuko’s connection to the city is a photo-story she has been working on for several years - photographing a major cultural happening in Yunnan – Yang Liping’s troupe. This story, as most works presented in this exhibition, refer to social circles, but focus on individuals. Through photos, videos, sounds and installations she tries to show what isn’t in focus: personalities, circumstances, atmospheres.

By any means this exhibition is not a denial or judgment of anyone’s behavior. It simply invites the audience to take a moment and think about their lives, the decisions made and future choices.

All the world’s a stage,

And all the men and women merely players:

They have their exits, and their entrances;

And one man in his time plays many parts.

William Shakespeare

他们都有其退场和登场;
