鸡血玉为朱砂（硫化汞） 渗透到高岭石，地开石之中而形成，这样两者交融，共生一体的天然宝石，在国内外是极为罕见的。鸡血玉产自低温热液矿床、火山岩或热泉沉积矿的朱砂条带的头尾及边缘地带，产量相当有限。鸡血玉主要用作印章及工艺雕刻品材料。 [1-2]

鸡血玉产地不同，质地成分也不同，但都离不开硫化汞成分。鸡血玉由“地”和“血”两部组成。一般认为“血”的矿物成分主要是辰矽。“地“的成分，如昌化鸡血玉，其“地”的矿物成分以粘土矿物中的地开石为主，也含有相当量的高岭石，明矾石、埃洛石、石英、黄铁矿等。

巴林鸡血玉主要是高岭石和硬水铝石，而质地较为细腻的黑冻鸡血玉和芙蓉冻鸡血玉的主要矿物成分为地开石和辰砂。前些年在吉林某金矿之顶部发现有近似“金顶红”的脉石英致密块体，其中辰砂非常细小，质地坚硬细腻，也是硬地含辰砂石料，当地称朱砂玉。 [1]  [3] 

鸡血的成份是硫化汞，石质则为地开石或高岭石，硬度为2—3度。石中时常带有水银斑及少量的石英颗粒突起于石表面。鸡血中除主要成份为硫化汞外，还含有少量的致色元素铁和钛。它们是深色染剂，它的含量多少是鸡血呈现不同红色的主要原因，含量多则血色呈暗红色。另外，鸡血玉也含有不同的感光元素硒、碲，这也是鸡血在光照和热烤下退色或变色（呈现暗红）的主要原因。 [1]

鸡血玉没有固定的形状，叫块石状，它的色状有块血、条血、梅花血、浮云血。

Chicken blood jade from different producing areas, texture composition is also different, but are inseparable from mercuric sulfide composition. Jixueyu is composed of two parts: Earth and blood. It is generally believed that the mineral composition of "blood" is mainly chensi“ The mineral composition of "Di", such as Changhua Jixue jade, is mainly dickite in clay minerals, and also contains a considerable amount of kaolinite, alunite, halloysite, quartz, pyrite, etc.

The main mineral components of Balin chicken blood jade are kaolinite and diaspore, while the main mineral components of black frozen chicken blood jade and Furong frozen chicken blood jade are dickite and cinnabar. A few years ago, a gangue quartz compact block similar to "jindinghong" was found at the top of a gold deposit in Jilin Province. Cinnabar is very small, hard and fine, and also contains cinnabar stone in hard ground, which is called cinnabar jade locally[ 1]  [3] 

The composition of chicken blood is mercuric sulfide, the stone is dickite or kaolinite, the hardness is 2-3 degrees. There are Mercury spots and a small amount of quartz particles on the surface of the stone. In addition to mercuric sulfide, chicken blood also contains a small amount of iron and titanium. They are dark dyes. The main reason for the different red color of chicken blood is the content of them. In addition, chicken blood Jade also contains different photosensitive elements, such as selenium and tellurium, which is the main reason for the fading or discoloration (dark red) of chicken blood under light and heat[ 1]
