NoDirection Home: The Life and Music of Bob Dylan
Americanmusic icon Bob Dylan won the2016 Nobel Prize in Literature. According to theSwedish academy, the folk songwriter was given the prize “for having creatednew poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” Dylan hasbecome the first Rock star to win the Nobel Prize in literature, recognizinghis many accomplishments during a career stretching back to the early 1960s. The Nobel committee’s action has provoked abuzz among the Dylan analysts around the world. While some feel that hedeserves the prestigious award simply for being Bob Dylan, many others willargue against the award, as they argued against him in the infinitely tiresomeDylan v. Keats controversy. In China,“the argument is also raging. Many feel that to grant the prestigious awardto Dylan is tantamount to giving the Lu Xun Prize in Literature to Cui Jian, the father of China’s folk rock. Some “self-ordained professors” are even moreskeptical by quipping that the seriousness of such a prestigious award is blownaway by the wind. Now, the questionsare: Do the meaning and value of every phase and nuance of his output qualifyhim as a major writer of our time if he is being judged on literary grounds?Compared to other excellent writers in contemporary America, does his workstand out as a literary masterpiece? Furthermore, by issuing Dylan the Award, was the Nobel committee aping Dylan’s petulance to the well-establishedliterary tradition in both America and Europe? This talk aims at a detailedanalysis of the questions above as well as a slew of relevant questions.
