    在传统与时代的张力这一关系上有些非常讲笔墨、非常讲线条,不仅有江南的韵味,还有汉唐的精神,能够把西方的光与色吸收得非常好,像赵绪成先生。我对袁运甫先生说,这个好呀,袁先生说他原来是不是在学西画的呀。我说他都行,这个不限于一个方面,他自己的视野非常开阔,把很多的好东西拿来,有中华民族的东西,有一个非常开阔的胸怀,我觉得他比古人的心胸更大。

In terms of the relationship tension of tradition and times, some artists pay much attention to the techniques and lines which create the lingering charm of Jiangnan (The southern areas of Yangtze River) as well as the vitality of the Han and Tang dynasties. This is true of Zhao Xucheng. He absorbs the light and color from the west very well. I mentioned the greatness of his works to Yuan Yunfu, who thought he was learning the western fine arts, and I replied, he is capable of both beyond boundaries. He has such a wide field of vision to respond to influences from all over the world. He is a broad minded person with a strong Chinese national identity. I think his mind is even broader than the artists of ancient times.

His position as the leader of cultural circles, especially of the fine arts elite, is verified in his paintings. Different from the Feitian’s elegant spirit, Mr. Zhao’s cityscape series are created with thick lines, planes and diaphanous ink style to display the reality city presents to mankind and the two different life experiences of ecstasy and frustration the ever-changing city brings to human life. Mr. Zhao’s work emphasizes the composition of city light, focuses on color-blocking and rich layers and immerses flowing colors combined into a balance of “strength” and “emotion”, bringing an awakening of innovation. The combination of light and shadow in Mr. Zhao’s cityscape collection creates a both traditional and modern world. Colored ink lines and speckled block compositions follow developing cities’ light and shadow, freeing spirit and meaning in every stroke. The brushwork in the picture can be separated into color, joined into ink, using ink to color, is the height of coloring.     我们不得不佩服赵先生在艺术上的杰出天赋和豪迈气概。在整个中国画坛普遍平庸化、柔糜化的今天,他竟然用中国传统水墨表现现代都市夜景中的声、色、光、电。这是史无前例,前无古人的。他先用坚定的线条和墨色作大面积铺陈,再用饱满、粉亮、炽热的颜色在黑底上营造华灯初上的绚丽和流光溢彩的车水马龙,既给人以强烈的视觉冲击又给人以强力的心灵震撼,既富有装饰性,又不失绘画性和艺术内涵。“流光溢彩”、“光怪陆离”、“玫瑰的夜”等都是其代表。这种大胆的创意有别于刘海粟的逸笔泼彩,刘先生是基于一种随机的放肆,赵先生是基于科学与严谨之上的奔放与洒脱。当然这种严谨又不同于李可染的无微不至和小笔点彩。他是一种更具“丈夫气”的放笔直扫,是一种豪迈与开阔。这种墨彩图式与黄宾虹先生的浑厚华滋有交集但又走向不同终点,黄先生主要是在水墨的“其小无内”中挖掘做出了杰出的贡献,而赵先生则主要是在水墨的“其大无外”、“墨彩对撞、幻化”中做出了杰出的贡献,创造出了崭新的、开放的中国画新图式、新内涵。

We have to admire Mr. Zhao's outstanding talent in art and heroic spirit. Different from today’s mediocre paintings, he unprecedentedly uses wash and ink to display the sound, light, color and electricity of modern city night, opening a new way in art creation. He first draws the contours with strong lines and ink, and then creates brilliant and dazzling night streets with bright colors on paper, decorative without losing artistic value, giving a strong visual impact and a spiritual shock. Paintings Brilliant Glow, Dazzling Lights, Rose Dream are representative of this style. Comparing to Master Liu Haisu’s free and casual style of splashing of color, Mr. Zhao’s bold and magnificent paintings are done based upon meticulous and scientific planning, while different from Master Li Keran's detailed and small stippling. His paintings are very powerful and bold, indicative of his “Machismo”. The style of ink and color paintings by Mr. Zhao and Master Huang converged but to a different end. Master Huang made a great contribution to the continuation of Chinese traditional painting, embodying the philosophy of "small with no inner", while Mr. Zhao has always served as an innovator to pursue the style of Ink Startles Colort in the most ideal way of “big with no boundary”. The pursuit of ink and color by generations of the finest Chinese artists, is ultimately realized in Zhao's work, and in his contribution to the modern renaissance of Chinese art.

From the exhibitions of the painters from Jiangsu province, we can tell the passion for life and the striving for the revolution of Chinese painting. Take Zhao Xucheng’s early work Good Morning, Lane and his present work Spectacular Night Scene in Nanjing as examples, they embody the spirit of contemporary events. There exists a big problem in Chinese aesthetic, and theoretical innovations basically always go to the painters. Chinese aesthetic theory is right for the smart artists, they never learn things step by step but mostly by enlightenment. Once you master one, you master all, which is a very common and interesting phenomenon in Chinese culture. It is our mission to pursue the innovation of art creation, and it would be the biggest regret we ever could have if we had not tried. And i wholeheartedly support and advocate Mr. Zhao’s original theme and theory, Mr. Zhao made a contribution to the development of Chinese painting both by his works and theories, echoing the era.

    赵绪成,我们从1988年以来就讨论水墨画的超负荷问题。赵绪成是敢于喊口号的,因为他确实是相当超前的、相当活跃,这跟他们的文化大省地位相关,画这批画,星光灿烂、灯火通明。我觉得艺术的禁区,我这个画种可以不去涉及,但如果我们不去实践,那是我们最大的失策。我们这批画家要不在这方面下功夫的话,以后就没出息。这次画展,赵绪成画新的内容,看到这个效果我很感动,我说好,继续努力,特别好。我们不能说这个禁区我不能动,这个口号我不能实现,我就画文人画、就画小品画、就画变形画、市场画等,我觉得江苏这些画家的着眼点远远比一般画家高。他的思维、对现实的认识、对艺术的理解,他所需要采取的手段,如何一步步达到、引导后进、引导年轻人,不管在画院贯彻好,还是在学院贯彻好,他的思考是一个实际情况,针对中国的当前实际。所以我看画展,特别高兴。作为一个领导,与他不是领导思考的问题就不太一样,既要保持艺术的超前,同时又不脱离中国的本土。

We have been discussing with Zhao Xucheng the problem of the proliferation of Chinese Ink and Wash painting since 1988. Zhao Xucheng is well qualified to pontificate on this issue because he is very active, with a modern mind, influenced by growing up in a huge culturally developed province. His glittering and glamorous paintings, in my opinion are controversial in the arts field. It is okay if I am not involved in this discussion, but it would be the biggest mistake we ever could make if we had not tried. We certainly will be worthless if we do not exploit this opportunity. I am deeply touched when viewing the works with new ideas by Zhao Xucheng in the exhibition, and I say, it is very good, keep on striving, it is fabulous. We could not paint the works of the Southern School, Xiao Pin Hua, transform painting or market painting just because we are denied access to this field nor fulfill the objectives. I think the painters from Jiangsu province are much more broad minded than those from elsewhere. His concept, reinterpretation of reality, profound understanding of the arts and the methodology in the final achievement are to educate and guide the young generation. His new ideas go well with the current situation in China. It is important that we spread his ideas both in the academies and colleges. That is why I am so happy to support the exhibition. The way he thinks as a leader, varies from the way he thinks as an ordinary person, which is to internationalize the arts, while not losing sight of his home country.
