Kaiyuan Tongbao is a kind of copper currency cast in Tang Dynasty. In the early Tang Dynasty, the Sui five baht was used, which was light and complicated. In the fourth year of Wude, Emperor Gaozu of Tang Dynasty (621 AD), in order to rectify the chaotic currency system, the Sui coin was abolished, and the five baht coin was cast to replace the five baht coin.

According to the records of shihuozhi in the old book of the Tang Dynasty, when Emperor Gaozu ascended the throne, he still used the five baht money of the Sui Dynasty. In July, the fourth year of Wude (621 AD) abandoned five baht money, and the bank opened yuan and Tongbao money, which was eight points in diameter, two baht and four yuan, ten articles weighing oneortwo, and 1000 Wen weighing six Jin and four Liang. " Qian Wen was written by the calligrapher Ouyang Xun, with the face inscription of "Kaiyuan Tongyi", and the shape and system still follow the Qin Dynasty's Kongyuan coin.

In order to rectify the chaotic currency system after the war, Emperor Gaozu of the early Tang Dynasty imitated the five baht coin of the Western Han Dynasty. The shape of the coin was the square hole round coin of the Qin Dynasty, with a diameter of about 2-4cm and square hole shape in the middle. The words "Kaiyuan Tongbao" were printed on the copper coin. Each coin had a uniform and strict weight. It had a thick copper face and back, a complete round outline, and a deep and clear text Sign. As a new round copper coin, it was the first time that copper coin was named Tongbao from Tang Dynasty, and became the standard of coinage after Tang Dynasty. It lasted for thousands of years. Kaiyuan Tongbao reflected people's new understanding of currency at that time. Taking copper coin as treasure fully reflected the change of people's concept of currency itself and the degree of respect in prosperous Tang Dynasty. The development of Kaiyuan Tongbao can be divided into three stages: Kaiyuan currency in early Tang, middle Tang and late Tang; In the middle Tang Dynasty, Kaiyuan's strokes were delicate and varied greatly. There were obvious differences in craftsmanship in the late Tang Dynasty, such as skew outline, blurred characters, and obvious differences in quality, which should be the result of years of war in the late Tang Dynasty.

Due to the change of the dynasties, the different time of the copper coins unearthed, which resulted in various forms and varieties of Kaiyuan Tongbao, so the market price is often different. The most expensive ones are early Tang Dynasty, the early years, and the existing goods are rare. In addition, in addition to the Kaiyuan Tongbao made by copper, in order to meet the special needs of Tang Gaozu, gold and silver were also cast. However, the two kinds of "Kaiyuan Tongbao" were not circulating in the market at that time, and were only for the Royal aristocrats to enjoy. All the stock is more scarce and the whole is preserved. The auction price of one piece is as high as tens of thousands of yuan. The collection of Kaiyuan Tongbao has epoch-making significance in ancient currency. Its shape manufacturing, text design, weight and all become the standard of later generations' money casting. The first mock exam of Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty, the five generation of Zhou Yuan's Tong Bao, was based on its design and innovation. Moreover, Kaiyuan Tongbao even affected the currencies of neighboring countries, such as Japan and North Korea. In this sense, Kaiyuan Tongbao witnessed a long history from the prosperous Tang Dynasty to the end of the feudal dynasty, and promoted the development of the world currency and even economy. It is a collection of great significance for modern people.
