Liu Zhan
Born in 1976 in Luoyang, Henan, China, Liu Zhan graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and established the art trio UNMASK in 2002. He lives and works in Beijing.
After leaving the artist trio UNMASK in 2011, Liu Zhan initiated a new artistic exploration as an independent artist, creating a series of installations based on his own research, which includes videos, prints, ready-mades, and sculptures. His exhibitions “The Mysteries of Animal Reproduction” and “Balcony” suggested that he attempted to pursue a new path of artistic creativity, that is, paying more attention to the scene. This way, the artist utilized and reflected on the spatial and historical dimensions of where his art projects were presented. The diversity and experimentality of his artistic expression, in addition to the internal and external multiplicity of the space, pushed the boundaries of the viewers’ experience to a degree.
Liu Zhan’s recent solo projects include Wind from “Southwest”at the Plate Space (2021), “Balcony” at DRC No.12 (2018), and “Liu Zhan: The Mysteries of Animal Production” at Magician Space (2017). His work has been exhibited at major collective exhibitions, which include “Futurism of thePast-Contemplating the Past and Future” in Chinese Contemporary Art at Beijing Exhibition Center (2021), “12 Artists: DRC Triennial” at DRC No.12 (2018), and “Emerging Curators Project 2015” at Shanghai Power Station of Art (2015).
Feng Xi
As an amateur curator wandering in the edge of the system, Feng Xi has his awareness and practice that differs from main stream curatorial thoughts and methods. He is adept at re-deconstructing the physical properties of space to transform a new exhibition language between space and artworks. He tries to weave it into the exhibition context to reshape the realistic relation and tries to master the understanding and output of the contextual relationship between exhibitions, which makes exhibitions independent of aesthetic exhibition logic and broadens the access to understanding exhibition language and presentation. Meanwhile, as a practitioner of independent art spaces, he has worked as the artistic director of DRC NO.12, the director of The Bunker, and the exhibition director of Garage Experimental Space. He is now an artistic director of the One Way Art Gallery, Chen Gallery and the Huaigulin Contemporary Art Center. He is also an academic committee member and researcher of Beijing Inside-Out Art Foundation Zhao Wenliang Yang Yushu Art Center. In addition, he joined the practicing group Jiejue Community in 2017 and became one of the three group members with the identity and thinking of being both a curator and an artist, using exhibition as a method of creation and practice.
About the Gallery
PIFO Gallery concentrates on the participation of the course of Chinese contemporary art and the exploration of post-war European master artists and seeking for all possibilities of art power in the dialogue and collision between the two aspects. As a major gallery in China specialized in the study and promotion of abstract art, and also the main institution to continuously explore the various possibilities of figurative art at present, PIFO is convinced that the experience of art emerges from the new world created by one revolution after another; The artist's work is the third eye to explore the world. For collectors, PIFO provides expertise and encourages them to explore their own unique perspective because only the combination of the two can make a great collection. We hope to see a growing number of collectors to take on the roles of a connoisseur, with a more in-depth understanding of Asian and Western contemporary art, and appreciate the artists discovered, reshaped and firmly believed in by the gallery.
