Human = Science
“Human = Science” is a film based on the code generation. The creation of the whole work is built on studies of Ren Yuanon philosophy, science and art, and his explorations on the questions “where are we from?”, “who are we?” and “where are we going?”. The music part is directed by Liu Yiwei.

X-LIVE
“X-LIVE” is a music visualization video made by Ren Yuan cooperating with X-LIVE as an artist. The visual part of the workis directed by Ren Yuan based on code generation, and the music is “Girls” in “World’s End Girlfriend”.
《X-LIVE》是任远以艺术家身份和X-LIVE合作的一部音乐可视化视频,整部作品的视觉部分是由任远基于代码生成,音乐为世界末日女朋友的《Girls》。

“11010110″ is a digital video that completely generated based on coding. The visual work is created by artist Ren Yuan which shows his exploration and thought on computer programming. Music in the film was created by Hong Qile.
Note: 11010110 can be converted to decimal number as 214 and the world’s first computer was invented on February 14, 1946.
《11010110》是一部完全基于代码生成的数字视频,作品视觉部分由艺术家任远创作,是任远对计算机编程的探索和思考。音乐部分由洪启乐创作。

PLAY
“PLAY” is a digital video based on codes, and the visual contents were created by artist Ren Yuan. Ren Yuan took a free style for his creation, and he did an exploratory experiment on different visual forms through computer programming before finally combining fragmented experiment results to form a complete work. The whole thing is the outcome of Ren Yuan’s playing with computer. The music contents were created by Hong Qile.
《PLAY》是一部基于代码生成的数字视频。作品视觉部分由艺术家任远创作,创作过程是以一种相对自由的方式进行,通过计算机编程对各种视觉形式探索实验,最终把碎片化的实验结果组合,形成完整的作品。是任远和计算机一起玩耍后的结果。音乐部分由洪启乐创作。

POETRY³
Can computers independently create a masterpiece?
POETRY³ is a computer program developed by Ren Yuan to explore this question. Maybe this can be achieved in a certain time through a great amount of random generation. However, it is far from something easy and only has a very small chance of happening. Moreover, whether a masterpiece is created or not needs to be decided by an aesthetic subject. If computers have aesthetic awareness, it is certainly different from that of human being. Therefore, the aesthetic judgment here in this question should be decided by human being. Over the generation process, human’s aesthetics stimulates the computer to generate works more and more close to a masterpiece. The program developed by Ren Yuan is based on genetic algorithm. It regards poetry as a population. The poems more close to people’s aesthetics in the population have a higher probability of passing their genes to the next generations. Meanwhile, mutation ensures the diversity of individuals. After several generations of evolution, the masterpiece may appear.
计算机能否独立创作出绝世佳作?
《詩³》是任远创作的一个计算机程序,用于探索这个问题,或许通过大量随机生成可以在未来某个时间点偶然出现,但这绝非易事,而且概率很小。况且是否为绝世佳作是需要一个审美主体对其进行审美,假如计算机有审美意识的话也不一定和人类相同,所以基于这个问题对绝世佳作的审美判断应该是人,在计算机生成的过程中,通过人的审美逐渐激发计算机向绝世佳作靠近。任远创作的这个程序是基于遗传算法来实现,把诗集当作一个种群,种群中的诗越符合人的审美,它们的基因被子代继承的概率就越大,再由变异来保证个体的多样性,在经历若干代进化后,或许就能出现那个绝世佳作。

VINCI
“VINCI” is a digital video created by Ren Yuan. The visual part of the work was generated by Ren Yuan through coding: he simulated a neural network through abstract node connection, then generated various forms based on the network structure. The whole network consists of 1950 nodes with short-range connections to each other. The music in “VINCI” was composed by Liu Yiwei.
Note: Alan Turing published Computing Machinery and Intelligence in 1950, proposing his famous theory of Turing test.
《VINCI》是任远创作的一部数字视频,作品视觉部分由任远基于代码生成,通过抽象节点连线模拟神经网络,再基于网络结构生成各种形态,整个网络由1950个节点短程相互连接构成。音乐由刘一纬创作。
注:1950年图灵发表论文“计算机器与智能”,提出著名的“图灵测试”理论。

Swarma
“Swarma” is a digital video, created by artist Ren Yuan, which was commissioned by Swarma Club, The visual part of the work is directed by Ren Yuan based on code generation, The music part is directed by Hong Qile.
Swarma Club, formally initiated in 2008, is an informal organization of investigators who enjoy scientific research. They cherish the spirits of equality, openness, and demonstration. They promote the inter-disciplinary communications and cooperation. They aim to build an "institute without fence" in China.
《Swarma》是集智俱乐部委托艺术家任远创作的一部数字影像作品,作品视觉部分由任远基于代码生成。音乐部分由洪启乐创作。
集智俱乐部,成立于2008年,是一个从事学术研究、享受科学乐趣的探索者的团体。它倡导以平等开放的态度、科学实证的精神,进行跨学科的研究与交流,力图搭建一个中国的“没有围墙的研究所”。

Ren Yuan 任远
Artist, designer and programmer. He is anexplorer in the field of Generative Art, Audiovisual Art, Data Visualization, Machine Learning and Complexity Science. He used to be the Art Adviser of VINCI, the Executive Director of Caixin Media and the lecturer of Centra lAcademy of Fine Arts. He is the founder of Ren Yuan Lab, the founder of Creative Coding (creativecoding.cn) and the author of Processing Interactive Programming.
艺术家、设计师、程序员,热衷于生成艺术、视听艺术、数据可视化、机器学习、复杂性科学等领域的探索和研究。曾任VINCI智能头机艺术顾问、财新传媒数据可视化实验室执行总监、中央美术学院数码媒体工作室讲师,现为任远实验室创始人、创意编程(creativecoding.cn)创始人。《Processing互动编程》作者。
