咸丰年间，太平军兴，列强入侵，内忧外患，清政府国库空虚，财政相当困难。为缓解财政危机，弥补亏空，清政府下令全国各地行钞票、铸大钱以应急。当时清政府铸钱铜源主要来自云南。但因太平天国革命爆发，为战争所阻隔，滇铜外运受阻，铜料来源不畅，造成铸钱用铜紧张。清政府除四处搜罗铜料以铸钱外，还开铸铁钱以解燃眉之急。

铁钱的大量铸造，必然产生劣币驱逐良币的现象，致使铜钱几乎绝迹。铁钱充斥市面，造成通货膨胀，物价高昂。咸丰年通货膨胀严重，始鼓铸百当以上大钱，陕局亦不例外。其中，宝陕局咸丰元宝当百、当五百和当千大钱，其中五百和当千有缘刻“官”字戳和无“官”字戳两种。陕局五百，厚重有加，因遗存不丰，所见较难。

该枚咸丰元宝，形制规整，大小合适，绣色自然，岁月痕迹鲜明，历史性过渡自然，为钱币珍品。钱币正面为“咸丰元宝”四字，背面上下注汉字”，左右注满文，其汉文楷书书体，字体规范有加，笔划力道十足，横直竖立，起落有顿，转折见锋，整体书意自然洒脱，俊朗端美，盎然美书风范儿彰显。正面圆形方孔的铜币，其形状外发天，内地法，取义惊鸿。咸丰年的钱币在整个清代是最好的，此币为咸丰钱币中的精品，价值将更高一层，是钱币收藏品中难得一见的珍品，值得收藏。
