Awakening·Water & Swimmer——An interpretation of Wenjue He ’s Painting Art

  Painting, an attractive epiphany of human being’s state and soul, is an individual sentiment involvement and experience of the artist. It is genuine and free, in which the spirit converts.

  Painting of young artist—Wenjue He is the very expression of his awakening of man’s living state at present.

  The painting art of Wenjue He reflects his way of being a man: passion in tranquility, agility in elegance, action in reflection and romance in freedom. The historical evaluation of people of Chu Kingdom that talents can only be found in Chu Kingdom is fully embodied on him. The romantic temperament and elements of brightness, elegance, freedom and delicacy found in his works have all composed Wenjue’s He distinguished pattern feature and language style.

  Wenjue He grew up in Hu Nan Province—the birthplace of Chu Culture. He graduated from Shen Zhen University, majoring in design. He is strongly conscious of design, but his feel of the expressive limitation of design makes him change his direction to pursue the freedom of painting. In his concept, painting is a free creation out of one’s soul and the freedom of soul is the very premise of all creation. Having pursuit in life and disposition, he entered CAFA’s 9th session of research and study class in oil painting. After graduation, he began doing business with a large amount of money. The ups and downs in his business or the lack of life and soul belongingness made him restart painting with the unexplainable disappointment towards reality in 1999. He expressed his sentiment and unutterable feelings and placed his past ideals in his painting to realize the unrealized ideals in reality. A soul journey began on the painting cloth. From a blank painting cloth to his works, from the beginning of one journey to the end, from the unknown to the known and from infinity to finity, he reveals his reflection and interpretation of realty and ideal, material and spirit.

  In Diamond Sutra, there is a saying that the heart is unattainable no matter in the past, at present or in the future. It means that the thinking of human beings is always changing and never stops. The birth of the new and perdition of the old in Wenjue He’s art of man and water are just like the changeable thinking, which interpret the genuine soul in awakening and solution. From his early focus on the idiographic and realistic painting in CAFA’s research and study class to the later focus on the individual abstract pattern, Wenjue He values more on the integration of sentiment and rationality in his creation while pursuing the integration of the idiographic and the abstract. Wenjue He’s sentiment externalization on the subject is expressed through sentiment –shift process. Therefore He’s painting pursues a flowing narration. The patterns he adopts in his works are always in the state of flow and changing. Any style or color he uses implies the dynamic process. The bright and unreserved style and color saturate his sentiment and emotion, which are realized in flow and change. In He’s comprehension, painting is a dynamic thinking trail, a transient moment, and a trail of spirit flow. This trail process turns his starting point in painting from idiographic and genuine soul flow to subjectivity grasp. Born in the birthplace of Chu culture, he has gained the inspiration of foreordination from water culture at early times. At this period, water has become the spirit field and pattern carrier of He’s painting. Wenjue He uses water as his creation’s element while his creation romances the basic element of life and nature—water. Water in cyan, green and blue is natural and bleak, the spiritual implication of which is the genuine state between water and nature, water, man and society. The mediating state, which may be caused by the psychology relating to past business experiences, has made the metaphoric and abstract water become Wenjue He’s life field to experience life and comprehend mental state, the barm to perceive the world and form consciousness and has formed a visual force-motion relation between water and man in the picture, a memory of water, a record with life and thinking in and contradictions between negative and positive, act and whist to the final balance.

  From the multi-interactive relation point of view, Wenjue He’s balance is the psychological project of the individual disposition and visual concern on humanitarian comprehension. The balance is revealed on the painting board and has happened in a natural state.

  One can always find combination of a lonely man and water in Wenjue He’s recent works. The visual image created by Wenjue He at early times shows the integration of contradiction between water and reality. He’s works has its own situational symbol and psychological implication. The natural combination and contradiction of his works and the images in his mind makes him concern more about the painting itself. The painter and the exposed object are both trying to break through the external oppressive force with maximum showing desire and freedom. The strength of life is exposed by the studious swimmer in a free, vigorous and forceful style. The ups and downs of the swimmer in water show an unbelievable force that has impelled him to keep forward into an unknown direction. The visual image in the dynamic process is the transcendentalism endowed to the unknown, which has embodied He’s apperception ability to the oneness of man, water and universe. This consciousness is affected by the endeavor to survive of numerous living entities and the profound consciousness of beauty appreciation and the way of value embodiment transformed by such behavior. In this sense, He’s painting has been enhanced to an important level—it contains spectacular universal imago.

  Wenjue He has established the visual form and dynamic form relationship between man and water, which has made his works a genuine manifestation. The delivery of this manifestation is his profound comprehension of water and the realistic magnificence of man and water and is his witty comprehension to enhance the material water to a visual language. In the works of the witty before Qin Dynasty, there is a saying on the dharma of water and man: “the witty like water while the benevolent like mountain; the witty like act while the benevolent like whisht.” As a metaphor, water—the most common and changeable natural phenomenon, has led the artist into an experience of artistic spirit and language formation and transfer. It is in compliance with range of thought and visual point of view of the artist and contains the depth of Wenjue He’s world perception.

  We are touched while appreciating the sculptural beauty in Wenjue He’s painting. It is come from the artistic trueness presented through He’s reliable visual sensation. This trueness is originated from but above life and comes from He’s soul. It is both the need of instinct and the essence of art. The famous art critic—Li Xianting once comments: “The principle to be touched in my idea is firstly the sensitivity to the cultural and humanitarian context that generates art— it is a certain kind of sensation in one’s living. What Li says is just in accordance with He’s exclusive self-awakening and comprehension of reality. Painting is an art that needs self-reflection and awakening of the artist. Those who can not bear loneliness and keep his mind quiet find it hard to be moved and to find his converging point with reality. Water is tempting and benefits from giving while man is full of desires. The unknown initiality of man to water and to society directly touches upon the essence of painting creation. It turns the visual impact of the painting into psychological impact on one’s inner world. It turns one’s focus to the sensitivity to reality and narrates the artist’s reflection upon the way of living and value concept that are based on current social culture. This is where the affect brought about by the humanitarian complex in He’s works lies.

  Wenjue He’s painting psychology comes out of his disposition awakening and personality perfection and is the result of his living state in life process. Amidst inversion of reality and loss of value, the concept formed in He’s painting has profound significance because of his high level of awakening. In Zen, there is a saying: “Awakening is the source of every thing.” The significance generated by Wenjue He’s awakening composes his real and free life field.

  We feel lucky for him that he has become an experimentalist to find and comprehend ego and to express it.
