M WOODS Museum is pleased to announce the appointment of Victor Wang as the Artistic Director and Chief Curator of both museum locations in Beijing, M WOODS 798 and the newly established M WOODS ART COMMUNITY beginning in October 2019. Victor Wang will be working closely with founders of M WOODS Lin Han and Lei Wanying, to embark on the future development of M WOODS including the M WOODS 798 and M WOODS Art Community (M WOODS Hutong). M WOODS 798 is located in Beijing’s landmark art district 798, where many renowned art institutions have settled and grown. To further integrate the cultural heritage and history of the city, the newly inaugurated M WOODS Art Community in Beijing’s city centre represents the museum’s strategy to situate contemporary art in the city’s centre. The larger of the two museums, M WOODS Hutong, is designed to also host live music, performance art, screenings and a restaurant, that will bring more exciting potential for museum visitors.
Wang, who has established himself as an independent curator moving between East Asia and Europe, and who recently curated a survey exhibition of Richard Tuttle at the museum, will spearhead M WOODS exhibition program across both museum spaces—and expand on the museum’s multidisciplinary program that encompasses dance, film, performance, music and talks.
"Wang is part of an exciting generation of curators that are redefining how we think about art from China, and how artists move between geographies and histories” says Lei Wanying. “Adding an extraordinary young curator whose expertise in this area is essential for us moving forward, and rethinking what it means to be an international museum”. Recently more museums in China are rethinking what it means to be a global museum”, says Victor Wang. “And after a successful collaboration with Tate Modern, London, and the recent expansion with the M WOODS ART COMMUNITY, I look forward to developing new ways of supporting contemporary art in this region”.
Wang joins M WOODS after developing a strong independent curatorial practice curating notable exhibitions with contemporary artists such as Haroon Mirza at Sifang art Museum, Nanjing (2019); Richard Tuttle at MWOODS, Beijing (2019); Michael Dean at ShanghART Gallery, Shanghai (2018); Katja Novitskova at Whitechapel Gallery, London (2018); Jac Leirner at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Pavilion, Shanghai (2016); Neïl Beloufa at chi K11 art museum, Shanghai (2016); amongst others. And notable group exhibitions that presented Chinese art in Europe such as ‘Micro-Era’ for the Nationalgalerie Berlin (co-curator 2019); ‘Dangdai Yishu’, Lisson Gallery, London (2019), and ‘Zhongguo 2185’ at Sadie Coles HQ, London (2017). Wang was editor of the recent publication ‘Performance Histories from East Asia 1960s–90s‘ (DRAF 2018) and founder of the ‘Institute of Asian Performance Art’. He has lectured on curating and contemporary Chinese art at universities such as Tokyo University of the Arts, Tokyo, The Courtauld Institute of Art, London, Goldsmiths, University of London, and is currently a Visiting Lecturer at Central Academy of Fine Art (CAFA), Beijing. Wang holds an MA in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art, London.
