The disseminator of lacquer painting at across the Strait

  - Professor Tang Zhiyi

  - Xu Kuncheng (Author: Dr. Xu Kuncheng, PhD in History of Fine Arts at Oriental Research Institute of University of Paris III: Sorbonne Nouvelle; currently Director/Head of Department of Fine Arts of Taiwan Chinese Culture University, and renowed painter)

In Taiwan we have lacquer craftsmanship, but I have never heard of lacquer painting. My wife, same as me, is also a professor at the Department of Fine Arts at Chinese Culture University in Taiwan. She has devoted a lifetime in the creation of oil painting, and would often travel back and forth between Taipei and Paris. So imagine her shock when she saw such an elegant and gorgeous painting form which she had no idea even existed. This happened in 2010, when my wife led a delegation of 34 CCU professors and students to visit the National Exhibition of Fines Arts in mainland China. During the show, they were amazed by the lacquer painting pieces and their artistic impact stayed on with them even after having returned to Taiwan.

Me as the director of CCU’s Department of Fine Arts of the author, upon the eager request of our fellow colleagues and students, finally asked around and heard that Fuzhou Normal University has already opened relevant courses. Later, introduced by Prof. Cai Qingde, a lacquer painting study tour to Fuzhou was quickly arranged. Then in 2011, I led a delegation of 29 members travelled to the lacquer painting workshop of Prof. Tang Zhiyi for the very first time, and paid a six-day visit for study and research. Our second exchange is in March 2012 when Prof. Tang was invited to come to Taiwan to launch and critique on the lacquer painting exhibition organized by the Department of Fine Arts on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Chinese Culture University. Taiwan and China Culture University, celebrating the 50th anniversary, invited Tang teacher to Taiwan for the exhibition of art students and faculty commented paint and ribbon. After winder break in 2012, with the efforts of the department faculty and students, CCU established its very own lacquer painting research lab and drying room, in addition to the inclusion of two hours of lacquer painting lesson per week. In the past, lacquer painting courses in Taiwan are only for students majoring in Process Design; so this is the first time that CCU has officially opened the course to Fine Arts majors. The course is delivered by myself. Later, in July, 2012, a nineteen-member delegation visited Fuzhou again on a “Place Shift Learning” trip. Again, Prof. Tang gave valuable guidance to the faculty and students on various lacquer painting skills. If anyone from CUU can ever accomplish any results in Taiwan, Prof. Tang Zhiyi’s contributions cannot go unnoticed; he can well said to be the first seeder of CUU lacquer paining.

The three times of contacts we have had with Prof. Tang, the three times of study trip, we have been welcomed with the gracious hospitality from Dean Li Yumin, Mrs. Tang, Prof. Cai Qingde, and all the faculty members of the School of Fine Arts of Fuzhou Normal University; the lessons and guidance we have received from Prof. Tang were all given for free, not a single penny was charged and not a tiny credit was taken, which moved us every time. We would still think of his big heart and love and caring for us all the time. We really do not how to thank him except to bring him some little specialties as gift.

The reason why Prof. Tang, also the deputy dean at FNU’s School of Fine Arts, has become such a great yet young lacquer artist, is not only his dedication and efforts spent in horning his techniques, he also has an adept expertise in oil painting; on top of all that, he is very humble and generous as a person. I genuinely hope that he will obtain more accomplishments in the field of lacquer painting to write a new glorious chapter in the history of Chinese lacquer painting, as Lao Tsu puts it, “success, then reputation, then a retired happy life, is the Tao of heaven.”
