Nothing is probably more remote from the European way of rendering pictures than classic Chinese ink paintings. But Czech artist Jiri Straka combines these two genres into organic creations. He uses Chinese ink to express some modern substances that are both thought-provoking and provide a fresh perspective.

　　"The Mundane World -- Jiri Straka's Ink Painting Exhibition" has opened at the Beijing Today Art Museum, a stronghold of the world's modern art.

　　The Czech artist has had a strong interest in Chinese culture since childhood. After graduating from the Chinese Department of Prague College, he came to China in 1995 to study Chinese ink painting at the China's Central Academy of Fine Art. During ten years of practice in this genre, he started out painting people, landscapes and flowers, before portraying objects from modern life. His works have the flavor of both Chinese ink and the vividness and spacial feel of western paintings.

　　The artist has put his thoughts about modern life into the tip of his brush, a media that allows him to often bring non-relevant characters into a kind of reality. With his background as a westerner, he has also made the genre of ink painting more international.
