Bridging | Lacquer Artist Zhang Jianjun

Zhang Jianjun, graduated from the oil painting department of Tianjin Fine Arts Institute. Since 2004, he has been working as a freelance artist and independently created art. He has held individual art exhibitions in New York, Beijing, Shanghai and other places. He is one of the few Chinese artists work with large lacquer art. With lacquer as the carrier, he seals up life, time and history, and applies profound philosophical principles to artistic works, which is thought-provoking.

With rebellious ears pierced and long hair, Zhang Jianjun's youth also had its ups and downs. Having lived through the best times of the art market, "the money came too fast, as if it was not real, and people were impetuous." Recalling those "mad" time, he sighed.

The day of the interview was the eighth day of his "diet therapy", during which he only ate boiled vegetables, drank herbal tea and practiced yoga. Such a life seems leisurely easy and quite ‘Zen’. After losing his youthful edges, Zhang now looks a bit different from the young man many years ago. The sunshine of wintry day shine into his study, those time, those groping and exploring days emerges as he talks...

Whose youth is not confused?

Hold on, it will come to an end.

There was a shift that delighted Zhang Jianjun when poor students sell paintings to improve their lives. He thought he would always enjoy the wealth of "art" like other friends in the market, a comfortable life after all. However, when things go too far, it went tothe other way. After experiencing the great boom, the art market gradually cools down. The pressure of getting married and having a family, as well as the physical discomfort caused by painting in long-term fixed motion, all caused him having to stop and re-examine himself to find his own art.

Collecting old furniture is on Zhang’s ‘like list’, and he has noticed that furniture from the Ming and Qing dynasties still gorgeously maintained. Looking through the materials, he learned that it was something called ‘lacquer’ that kept it alive until today, and he gradually developed an almost obsessive interest in this magical material.

The lacquer he works with is not the chemical lacquer in traditional sense, it is a natural coating. "There is a special charm in the texture, the integration of ancient and modern, eternal contemporary" which is an insight on lacquer from archaeologist Mr. Xu Tianjin.

The various utensils with large lacquer as the carrier which were excavated from the ancient tomb still beautiful for thousands of years from shapes to colors. Futhermore, they have more unique charm due to the history. These characteristics of the lacquer inspired Zhang Jianjun's creation. He began lacquer with a single cockscomb—the moment when it was sealed up with maximum vitality.

"Three years underground, bamboo shoots three feet a day as soon as it starts growing. Three years were long and dark. Unable to see the sunlight, there will be many lives dies during the process. Artistic creation is often lonely and not understood by people. Along the way, I have seen talented people buried because they have not made the transition, which have distorted their mindset. " Zhang Jianjun felt deeply about this. He also thanked himself for his perseverance to go through a variety of pressure, ‘liver over’ and see the light.

Perhaps through his experience, many of Zhang's works are extremely hard to understand and sharp cruelty, which break the traditional aesthetics in people's ideology. They are more about expressing the rebirth after death, that is, death or life, in a philosophical sense.

At the best of times, express yourself

‘Face to Face - The Furthest Distance’

Walking into Zhang Jianjun's creation base in Songzhuang, Tongzhou district, Beijing, we saw a wide variety of lacquer works. As the leading contemporary Chinese lacquer artist, Zhang and lacquer seem to have an indissoluble bond. After suffering from extreme allergies, his art career began to be inseparable from lacquer.

Material needs language to express, new language can give a new life to old materials. Combining his own thoughts with the particularity of lacquer material, Zhang created three series of works:,andfrom three philosophical perspectives of sealing life, time and history. Each series is the presentation and interrogation of the true meaning of life by art.

‘Half by Man, Half by God’

Lacquerware has always been mysterious, unfamiliar, forgotten, marginalized and becoming an endangered culture. Lacquer serves the ancient material, it is little-known to the public. Since ancient times, lacquer, a special material, has been used by artists to seal many works related to history and life. Lacquer art is worth to be found and remembered.

‘Face to Face - The Furthest Distance’

"In other people's eyes, soul after exploring the death may be more about fear, which is just a simple understanding of consciousness, and these bring me to think more about why people think death not losing life, but stepping out of time, everything is just a beginning. "

‘Is it still alive?’

We have to admit that Zhang is a brave and creative artist. A bloody ox head, an emerald basjoo or a sunflower in full bloom which are sealed up at the most beautiful moment of life with lacquer, polishing repeatedly, and carefully carved with detailed texture. Craftsmanship alone is wonderful and then can find the freedom of heart because of technological freedom. "When the first snow falls in Beijing, I will begin to seal up the bodies of horses." Said Zhang, still making new attempts and explorations.

‘Half by Man, Half by God’

Recently he has been keen to seal the air with xuan paper, an egg-shaped device that pasted on the shell and daubed it with paint to mark the date and PM numerical of the day. Capturing the inspiration life gives at this moment, also use this to remind of himself to hold to the responsibility of environmental protection thereby. Zhang admitted that this would be his long-term project in the future. Time and space are condensed in the installation with strong artistic atmosphere, which is really wonderful.

Zhang's works embody his reflection on current social phenomena. Archive series are his works which are made to record social reality, and a great number of political newspapers about social history are sealed up with artistic techniques. Rights and wrongs are up to time. All we need to do is respect.

‘Half by Man, Half by God’

He felt that art did not have to be high above the masses. There are many works created by old shoes, old newspapers and discarded xuan papers in his creation base. In this way, his art is close to every ordinary person, which is full of ordinary senses and resonates with more people. Now that he has found the wonderful "language" of lacquer, he will express it to he wishes.

Keep the Parkview Green FangCaoDi as remembered

For Zhang, art is his destiny. He believes that art is not about life and death, even if life disappears, art still exists. Perhaps this is just one of the charms of art, which can transcend time and space continue. Like many artists, he is just an executor of the continuation of art, and he feels lucky that he can find the most important career of life.

Money, desire, enjoyment, our life are full of all kinds of temptations. Growing too fast, inevitably grandiose, forgetting their original intention. "Constantly absorb and build your own culture. When one is empty, one is apt to drift with the tide. " Zhang often introspections, constantly absorbs, hopes to keep the Parkview Green FangCaoDi as he remembers, treating art and friends through heart.

Referring to the ultimate destination of artworks, Zhang believes that the ultimate mission of art should be to return to the public. Although it was only a brief encounter, he was impressed by Parkview Green FangCaoDi - a public collection of art works. "As a commercial building, Parkview Green FangCaoDi also has a strong and diverse artistic atmosphere. It uses concrete space to concentrate the works of artists of different styles and creates an inspiring creative environment, which fully reflects its inclusiveness. Without deliberate arrangement and rendering, art works appear quietly in casual corners. " He thinks Parkview Green FangCaoDi is a good example of art returning to public space. It is unique and creative.

Drifted to Beijing for 14 years, Zhang admitted that he may be just a traveler in Beijing. No matter where you are, if you know who you are, find your true self in the fog of life. "To break the unity of time, space, mind and senses. Everything comes from the dead, waking up from the silence and being alone. Zen gives birth to the ethereal life. " Zhang has his own understanding of life.

"My dream for the comingten years is to own an art garden of my own and form my own team. Most of my team members are disabled and I want to train them into excellent craftsmen. Let art comfort the wounds of fate and help them find their own value... "Speaking of the future, Zhang has a calm and expectant smile on his face. Although the weather of Beijing is particularly cold in November, his room is filled with a different kind of warmth, full with great wishes.
