Preface
In the recent five years, Chinese contemporary art, which is the most active in Chinese culture field, is
more committed to reflecting current diversified and rich social structure through combining traditional
and realistic ways of thinking. With its sharp and in-depth cultural content, it presents huge changes of
the oriental country with unique historical tradition in globalization and modernization tide. In their
specific creations, Chinese contemporary artists advocate merging into global contemporary art and
meanwhile also reflecting Chinese possibilities and unique methodologies of contemporary art through
different culture concepts and expression ways. This exhibition is based on the current status of
Chinese contemporary artists' creation, and attempts to generalize and demonstrate new changes and
new trend through works of representative artists.
The theme of the exhibition is "In Silence", which is, on one hand, presenting artists' ideas and latest
achievements through the way of "joint exhibition" and making relatively objective and general
conclusions; On the other hand, examining artists' works in a "bystander's" perspective and calmly
pondering gains and losses of these artistic practices. As curators of this exhibition, we also took into
account the age span of participating artists when we selected artists. The ages of artists range from 70
year-old to 30 year-old. We not only focus on mature contemporary artists, but also pay more attention to
young artists, trying to form a comprehensive observation angle. The exhibition also reinforces "Chinese
view" of contemporary arts. For example, we select works of some contemporary ink painting artists,
and try to discuss the cultural significance of contemporary ink painting in Chinese contemporary art,
rather than ink definition of purely media or language.
There is a limit for display capacity of this exhibition; in addition, it is also objectively restricted by
exhibition venues, exhibition displays, intercontinental cultural interpretation and cultural context. For
example, the exhibited works are mainly in the form of frame works, and there are limited creations of
devices, images and other aspects, etc.. However, we believe that the "In Silence - China Contemporary
Art" is just the beginning of China - Australia contemporary art exchange. We also look forward to more
exhibitions for exchanges, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all friends who support this exhibition!
