偏锋新艺术空间即将参展2019年巴塞尔香港展会-亚洲视野单元,带来中国实验水墨的领军人物张羽个展,呈现上茶系列作品,展会期间艺术家将进行上茶行为表演,展位3D29。

1959年生于天津,1988年毕业于天津工艺美术学院。现工作、生活于北京。

张羽是中国九十年代以来实验水墨的灵魂人物,他的艺术创作反映了中国水墨现代性在视觉形式与内在精神上的一种发展方向。八十年代后期开始三十余年反复探索的水墨实践,展示了他对生命及艺术本质永恒性的内在诉求与表达。“灵光”系列是张羽真正意义上探寻水墨现代性问题的开始,也是对书写的笔墨终结。他放弃传统笔墨中心主义的创作理念,对水墨媒材特质性能重新认识与再挖掘,以光、残圆、破方这些基本的图式符号,建构起一个个超越于日常生活经验之上的精神性的宇宙图景。美国9·11灾难之后创作的“每日新报”系列以水墨拼贴的艺术语言,表现他作为一个当代艺术家对现实社会的思考和人文关怀,探索与当下经验相连接的水墨表达方式。2002年再创作的更为简化的心手相应的“指印”系列,建构了一个属于自己的完整的艺术创作系统,一个个的指印单纯繁复的过程,使抽象性的图像逐渐化为痕迹,是以文化概念的行为方式针对艺术问题的表达。2008年张羽提出水墨不再等于水墨画,主张水与墨回归到自然世界中的本来状态,近年来的上水、上墨、上茶系列的艺术创作则是对水墨问题的终结,彻底走出水墨,通过一个本来非常纯粹,又无直接意义的装置行为,传达超越日常观念的思想认识,所呈现的是一种重新认知的形而上的有无关系,并探索其置于不同自然文化语境中的多重关系与可能性,以及他在新的时代背景下对当代艺术问题的思考。

张羽曾策划编著了《中国现代水墨画》《二十世纪末中国现代水墨艺术走势》等丛书,并接连策划了多次水墨艺术展,九十年代实验水墨成为中国艺术史发展中的重要一环,张羽有其不可或缺的影响与推动作用。张羽的艺术创作被广泛收录于中国知名艺术评论家巫鸿、高名潞、吕澎的重要艺术史著作中。

Born in Tianjin in 1959, China. He graduated from Tianjin Fine Arts Academy of Arts and Crafts in 1988. Currently he lives and works in Beijing.

As Zhang Yu has served as one of the pioneers in experimental ink wash painting since the 1990s in China, his artistic practice manifested the development of the modernity of ink wash painting in reference to visual form and inner spirit. The thirty years of continued investigation into the practice of ink wash painting since the late 1980s, in a sense, manifestly revealed his inner needs and outward manifestation of the intrinsiceternity of life and art. Through the “Devine Light” series, Zhang Yu formally embarked upon probing into the modernity of ink wash painting and discontinued his calligraphy literally. Distancing himself from the traditional ideology centering on pen and ink, the artist started to re-observe and reexamine the characteristics of media in ink wash painting, putting together a series of spiritually cosmic schemata beyond the daily experiences by means of underlying representational symbols such as light, incomplete circle and unfinished square. The “Daily Newspapers” created after the 9/11 attacks in the United States, on a basis of the artistic language of ink collage, prominently displayed the artist’s thought and humanistic concern for the realistic society as a contemporary artist, attempting to locate an appropriate medium of expression that could correlate the existing experiences and ink wash painting. Linking heart and mind, through the more simplified “Fingerprints” series created in 2002, the artist brought about a unified scheme of artistic creation of his own. The process of repeated fingerprinting one by one allowed the abstract images to turn to marks, functioning as a means to touch upon artistic issues in a way of cultural sense. Zhang Yu pointed out in 2008 that ink wash was no longer equal to ink wash painting, he asserted that ink and wash should go back to the basics in the domain of natural world. The recently created series including the Shang Shui (Feeding Water), Shang Mo (Feeding Ink), and Shang Cha (Feeding Tea) demonstrated the end of his concern about issues of ink wash. Dissociating from ink wash, the artist showcased his thoughts and awareness beyond the everyday viewpoints through an installation-based performance that’s naturally conceptual yet not directly conveying any messages. All of it was to present a sort of metaphysical relation re-recognized and to look into its multiplied relationships and possibilities in the naturally cultural context in addition to the artist’s reflections on the contemporary art under the circumstances of the new era.

Zhang Yu edited the books “Modern Chinese Ink Painting” and “Trends of Modern Chinese Ink Works at the End of the Twentieth Century”. In addition, Zhang Yu curated a great number of art exhibitions featuring ink washpainting, undoubtedly, his influence and contribution to promoting the ink wash painting allowed the experimental ink painting of the 1990s to be a major part of the history of Chinese art and its development. Zhang Yu’s artistic works have been widely featured in a range of major books of art history penned by prominent Chinese art critics such as Wu Hong, Gao Minglu and Lü Peng.
