Suzhou Museum will present A Golden Lion Costume: Liang Ying Solo Exhibition on May 18, 2020. The exhibition is planned and organized by curator Xie Xiaodong. The exhibition theme ‘a golden lion costume’ is in reference to the artist’s work with the same title – this artwork is a critical new starting point of the spirit in Liang Ying’s creation in the past few years. Along with more than twenty works, it showcases to audience the artist’s quest and thinking on history and culture by means of the painting medium.

In the 1990s, after returning from abroad, Liang Ying created‘Liang Ying’s Diary’ series, and for a long time, she has been well recognized by its unique ‘feminist’ point of view. These works are deeply influenced by western Modernism and German Neo Expressionist paintings, in particular by the likes of her mentor Sigmar Polke. ‘Liang Ying’s Diary’ series has put her on a singular position amongst Chinese contemporary art. Whereas in the past few years, through observing during travels and reading various archives, in addition to softening the female perspective, Liang Ying has expanded more reflections on serious themes, and thus has created a collection of ‘new expressionist ink paintings’ works with contemporary sensibility.

On one hand, Liang Ying strengthens her exposure and study of the Chinese tradition, and is dedicated to rediscovering the Chinese brush and ink tradition. Nourished by calligraphy, literati painting, popular literature, prints of Ming and Qing Dynasties, Dunhuang mural painting, etc., her oeuvre shows a vigorous connected network of Chinese traditional culture. On the other hand, she adopts practices such as imitating and copying, cutting, enlarging, collage, misplacement, to regroup imagery resources taken from different times and spaces, and thus creates a new visual language. Moreover, while on the quest for a new paradigm of brush and ink, Liang Ying takes advantage of the broader theme and starts to thoroughly approach new topics such as history and politics, legend and faith, the collective and individuals, and by expressing her concern on these areas, she enables her work to carry more weight aside from having an easygoing and humorous tone and an aesthetic beauty.

Works shown in this exhibition span from 2014 to 2019, A Golden Lion Costume is a special artwork. While watching the traditional Chinese lion dance performance on TV, Liang Ying sees from it the powerlessness of each individual in the face of our time. The all-mighty looking lion in fact is but a costume controlled by others and this has made her cautious about the power of individuals – including heroes and knights-errant (xiake) alike, as well as the common mass. The world seems to possess its own law and power, and in the face of our time, no one can assert he can determine his own destiny – this kind of circumstances has not merely existed in our history and culture, but is repeatedly staged every day. The exhibition will be held at Suzhou Museum, where the world of ink realized by Liang Ying will be in interesting dialogue with I. M. Pei’s architectural aesthetics, and it will inaugurate artistic imagination on the topics of the East and the world, the classic and the contemporary, the past and the future. Impacted by the pandemic, the exhibition will open on May 18, International Museum Day, and the opening ceremony will take place at another chosen time based on the progress of pandemic prevention and control. Over the course of the exhibition, the organizer Suzhou Museum , the partner Yumiao Culture, Triumph Gallery will invite multiple artists, scholars and critics to participate in a series of academic salons, which take Liang Ying’s paintings as the origin, to further investigate several issues of academic significance.
Liang Ying was born in Beijing in 1961, studied at the Chinese Painting Department of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts from 1981 to 1982 and received an art scholarship from the Rotary Club of HFBK Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein from 1983 to 1993. She received a master’s degree in art in 1991. Her works usually take on a contemporary style with a bold and unconstrained appliance of ink and bright colors and rely heavily on the subtlety of the intermediate colors to avoid strictly following Chinese ink painting traditions. Instead of making summaries of real life, Liang Ying paints based on her own personal feelings and experience with humor and personality.
Liang Ying’s solo exhibitions include: "A Golden Lion Costume”(Suzhou Museum , Suzhou, 2020)“,"Immortal – Liang Ying Solo Exhibition” (Triumph Gallery, Beijing, 2019), "Creatures: Liang Ying‘s paper works" (AYE Gallery, Beijing, 2018), "Land of Ghosts – Liang Ying Solo Exhibition" (Shanghai Hwas’ Gallery, Shanghai, 2017), "Land of Ghosts – Liang Ying Solo Exhibition" (Triumph Gallery, Beijing, 2016), "Freedom Everywhere — Liang Ying Solo Exhibition" (Uspace Art Space, Suzhou, 2015), "Liang Ying Diary" (Triumph Gallery, Beijing, 2014), etc.
