Preface on Sui Cheng’s Works
In Sui Cheng’s installation series from 2005 to2006, the floating figures in his Swimmer series appeared again. This personalized media of symbol transformation has become a ubiquitous history witness. These figures have no eyes, no mouths or emotional expression. They just exist silently anywhere in the world: on far-flung fields, in disappearing or disappeared old towns, in developing factories, under the brilliant icons, within the walls of the old imperial capitals or against the walls. They, the distinct image symbols of the artist, have been set into the historical background in today’s constantly changing China, witnessing the contradiction and interlace of the ancient brilliance vanishing and the modern civilization rising. They have heard the frequently converted slogans and whistles on the stage and the roar of the machinery cultivating the northern land. However, the most important thing is, who are they? Who they are representing? They are us. They are just like us, who have seen the changes of the world, and have cut off the umbilical cord connecting us and our hometown. We are the swimmers floating and struggling in the sea of the changing world, incapable of crying out. We are the figures acting hastily and choosing to forget the past rapidly. We have vague features because we are afraid we have different expression from others. As a generation with collective feelings, we are all in Sui works. We are everywhere. We were born in 1960s.
Sui Cheng’s figure symbols have become metaphors of a generation experiencing the historic great change.
