With Time Comes Golden Memory
— An Eternal Song
- TangZhiyi
Water, as the origin of all things in the world; rivers, with its endless movement, is the portrayal of life’s journey. Who can live even longer than the rushing river? Who has the heart can be filled with the fluxes of this never-changing warmth? Do we have to stand on a higher hilltop to be able to overlook the river that has spanned for thousands of years; that have seen and carried the vicissitudes and human fate. Joys and sorrows of life ebbing and flowing with the river of fate; everybody has to live with the unstoppable alterations of sadness and happiness. Countless days and nights, springs and autumns have rippled away in the river of memories, stretching forward… …
The jade-like silky green, the elegant warm amber, the fresh peaceful purple, the quiet melancholy blue, the deep mysterious black, the brilliant fiery red and the shining exciting golden, are all flashing before my eyes like brisk lively nymphs. This is what the colors are of the river in my memory.
There are two great rivers in my life that has accompanied and inspired me: one is the mother river of my childhood hometown - the Zhangjiang River, the other is the mother river of my current residence city - the Minjiang River. Alongside the Zhangjiang River leaves the countless innocent childhood dreams and carefree laughter; Beside Minjiang is my fifteen years of perspirations mixed with hardships and joy in the course of my pursuit for art. These two rivers in my life, although they might not be as grand as other famous rivers, but what they gave me is the endless passion, comfort and strength. These two rivers, with their natural, warm, ever-running yet soft and serene quality, are not odd, not weird, not strange, and not confusing, but forever smooth and crisp, as gorgeous sparkling sunshine. Sky lights and water waves, stretching and passionate, form together a colorful blend of chaos, expanding, flying and flowing. Through this surreal yet real river I can feel stronger about living, beyond all the pains in life. All the free boundless dreams and visions can all find the soulful response in the waves above the river. All this made me realize that the spirit of art is always something drifted above the landscape, just as what China’s ancient philosopher Chuang Tzu said, “the Sky and the Earth have great a beauty but never tells.” Lao Tzu also says, “great music unheard and great elephant invisible”. This is the integration of aesthetic thoughts and philosophical reflections on the most fundamental issues, as “beauty”, “sound”, “shape” are all beyond the senses. Standing beside the river, I’ve always wanted to avail myself of the lights and colors from different seasons to convey the brilliance of humanity and attitude of living, so that my inner passion and peace can be vaguely depicted in an imagery or abstract manner, hidden amidst the shimmering surreal yet real sparkles. This is how the imagination of your soul can be delivered and how the spirit of art shall never cease… …
Time flows like an old timeless song. Each and every one of us is writing his or her own song through life's journey. Some of the songs are passionate; some magnanimous, or tragic, or glorious. The life I am having, however, has bestowed me a very unique graceful painting brush that enables me to be lucky enough to record my every step of the way with different art piece one after another. Be it a sunny day or a whisht autumn night; all are transformed into glistening touches of strokes that echo with part of your memory, deep memory or fresh memory, illusionary or real, with light or shade, on and off. Some memories often flash back in your mind all over again without you realizing it or when you are buried deep in remembrance, reminding you of the good or bad of the past… …
It has been 20 years since I first come to study lacquer painting. During these years my interest has also covered a broad range of other artistic field and I have tasted a great variety of painting styles of painting and a great variety of media languages, but at the end of the day, it is lacquer that truly fascinates me, all because of its rich capacity of variable expressiveness. But the long and tough process of exploration into the art of lacquer, to this day, has been at least 15 years. The art of lacquer is an artistic creation process that encompasses a group of different textures of materials, with very distinctive features of the oriental charm and national cultural imprint. Lacquer is something very oriental, very Chinese, so whoever engaging in the lacquer painting should possess ample admiration and confidence for this oriental culture.
Fifteen years of time, in a person's entire lifetime, cannot be counted as too long, so there does not involve the grand motif of time. But for lacquer painting, an ancient yet freshly-regained painting type, and as for a devout follower of art, fifteen occurrences of seasonal changes can definitely leave out a period of golden years in the river of time. And the as to the reason why you can you walk into the far depth of time again and again, is because of the enchanting dialogue with lacquer, is the work with lacquer, the commitment to lacquer, the cultivation of lacquer, all of which come down to an unforgettable spell of golden years!
