PARK
When I was younger my family spent summers by a lake in the midlands. Parked in a caravan, hemmed in by trees. Through the window a Rorschach view of water mirroring sky. There was no sound of cars.At night, an absolute darkness and full silence. I would imagine and still imagine living on the water's edge. I tried once but there are too many laws in Ireland against building on a lakeshore among it's wet stones and purple loosestrife.
In 2016 I visited Holly's Gallery in Guangdong, Guangzhou, on the other side of the world. It sits proud, elevated on the edge of a busy road. Steps take you up and away through an entrance that feels welcoming, it has a soft and friendly face. Inside, the building plays tricks. Once past the reception I am outside again and crossing a stone bridge. The constant traffic is distant and the passage is now through dense green plants and carved stone columns. The building is, as every gallery should be - a gateway. On the other side of this remarkable gate is a park and water. Holly's gallery not on the edge of a road but on the shore of a beautiful lake.
This is the unusual setting for an unlikely gathering; Liam Gillick, Callum Innes, Merlin James, Liu Ke, Isabel Nolan, Sean Scully, Liliane Tomasko and Zhou Li. Eight very different artists, parked together for a while…
This exhibition and publication is the result of a conversation. It is an attempt to explore new relationships and suggest possibilities. Kerlin Gallery would like to thank all the artists who have agreed to take part and in particular Yefu Wang and Holly’s Gallery for extending to us the invitation to visit and collaborate.
