I used to wander about for days with a vacant mind, surrendering myself totally to the vast and tempest-tossed world in a puzzle at the hollowness. Sometimes I would feel right comfortable to be of slightly isolated from wherever I am, while at some other times I would suddenly shudder by a chill arising from such a distance. Upon the cognition of this spiritual menace, a feeling of falling into the deepest darkness of abyss kept emerging from my restless heart. There it is the hollowness, right on the way to the lost consciousness of my solitary being. However, is this hollowness, this absoluteness that derives relativity, this radiance that looks into shadow, this reality that bears the name of phenomenon, the ultimate image that I am to conceive and recreate on my canvas? Or is it that I have been far too much indulged in such a spiritual state of solitude, anxiety, and bitterness? As an artist who has chosen painting as my voice, isn’t it my duty to get involved in actions at my free choice and to bear responsibility for my own actions as well as for the society? Isn’t it my cause to reveal shackles to human freedom and the ugliness of outside world with an aim to present the audience with a free choice in such a ubiquitous hole of reality world?
As we all know, only when “being-there for-themselves”, could human beings give interpretation on what they are and determine what natures they have. We are not directly delivered from the brain of the Supreme Being and thus not gifted with an innate discernment of Good and Evil. Therefore, we could not interpret our deeds by simply referring to an established humanity. In other words, determinism is of no use since human beings are born to be free-willed. If the action of a person is determined by the will of others instead of his own, this person would by no means be called as a “being”, since he has lost his will of free choice, thus his personality and his Being. Only through free choice, could human beings discover their true self-being. This on one hand indicates an active attitude of in-the-world. On another hand, free choice is actually a choice based upon ontological being of oneself, accepting neither “order” nor “defense” from the outside world. So it also contains a sort of absolute freedom of individualism. What is more, since free choice is essentially a private choice made by oneself, it is lack of any “leverage point” and thus absurd in essence. Since everyone in this society has his or her own thought and will, namely “subjectivity”, conflicts and disputes between different “subjectivities” would be unavoidable. In such an absurd world lack of authority, logos and rules, human beings could only exist in a distressed and lonely state, walking every single step with a shackle over their shoulders. Therefore, when facing the chaos of the reality world, what we could do is to strive for a positive existence by persistently creating our being-there through free choice and bringing the essence, meaning and value of human beings to light through our own actions so as to break away from the established realities and create a future out of our own free will.
In each piece of my Green Water Series, I have depicted one person swimming in vast green water, with a mood at sea as well as an attitude at ease, towards a direction probably only he himself is aware of. When I was creating these art pieces, I had always been in a conflict between my creation and the theme I intended to suggest. Such a conflict is an interaction between the randomicity of themes and the subjective pulse of artistic creation. It occurs “occasionally” within a space related to both established and haphazard reality, as a revelation of our existence. With the help of given techniques and instruments, I managed to explore into the reality that instantly reflected on my heart, or more accurately to say, to explore into my empathy with the tangible reality.
In my mind, art is by no means a thing to please eyes, but a recreation of a new reality. An art piece should freely express itself by making canvas a stage for some material actions, thus to find a reason for its existence in this chaotic world.
