D.Krilito
A Breathof Smoke
Initiatedin 2004, “A Breath of Smoke” by Wang Yiqiong, is a piece of work facing globalsmokers, and a work related to performance concept. A most basic conditionrequires each smoker, as possibly as he/she can, to spit one breath of smokesupposedly breathed into the lung onto paper, or onto oth er absorptivematerial like napkin, for example. “A Breath of Smoke”, so to speak, breakswith concept of trace study. It also breaks with aesthetic phil osophyrepresented by Duchamp, Klein and Any Warhol whose ideas begin with concept andalso end with concept. This work of Wang Yiqiong allows itself to completelyget out of existent fences and relates itself aesthetically to personsseemingly unrelated. In this sense, this Breath work has turned Joseph Beuys’ssupposition “Everybody is an artist” into reality. Of course, no one reallythinks that the person who casually spits one smoke onto pap er is equal to anartist, because whether he/she is an artist matters little to them---whatmatters is how he/she feels inwardly after that breath of sm because, afterall, he/she gets engaged with an artist’s work. Besides, eac h person feelsdifferently from another. Those visible “traces” will not be r epeated, notcould they be repeated. Such similar “explosion”, in another s ense, springsfrom “psychical explosion”, exploded without physical explos ive. From this, anaesthetic meaning has been swiftly shifted into a social m eaning. Meanwhile, the work itself extends from inner dimension to outwa rd one, and expands, too…until entanglements in wounds, entanglements i n what society provokes you, andentanglements in previous art history ex perience, so on and so forth., arebeing unknotted... A good art work must create and transcend art history. “ABreath of Smoke” is everybody’s work. (Written by D. Krilito)
