  我们尤其不能忽视画家独特的造诣。一方面他捉取了旁人未必见的冷僻诡异区分真实,加以再现,犹为王维云“意出尘外,怪生笔端”;另方面给作品保留了无可再少的东西,也就是马蒂斯《笔记》所说:“要做到画面没有无用之物,无用之物有害于感情的表现。”他便在这亦“奇”亦“精”之中,写出了艺术的真与画家的我。

  We can not ignore the artist's unique skills in particular. On the one hand, he captures those rare and queer that others may not see and distinguish them from the reality and then reproduce them. Just like Wang Wei’s, “idea surpasses the earthly world, queerness comes from the pen”. On the other hand, works retain nothing that can be omitted, just as Matisse’s Notes, says: “Painting should include nothing that is useless, because useless thing is harmful to the performance of the feelings.” So Zhang writes the truth of art and the painter himself in the words “queer” is “refine”.

  历代善绘画者,运其笔胜染墨,主孰神也,次孰品也,又孰逸也,逸孰蕴也,得孰置阵,要孰形质,须孰浸透,更孰理法。观张桂铭先生绘事能于一波三折,运其笔而得振动,以笔中涵墨获其韵。他能触一通万出神入化;以脱略形迹得禅清品;以天地为师获逸之气;以无极而极返本絪蕴;以进退腾潜布阵得势;以道法自然按形炼质;以真意直觉渗透艺外;以据史引经博览理法。

  Through history, those who are good at painting are all very good at using his own pen more than ink. They master their works’ spirit, then the taste, then ease, then meaning and content. They also are familiar with the form and the method. Zhang Guiming painting can bring a feeling of twists and turns. He can touch a single thing but open a million. His absorbs the ease from earth and sky, he returns return to the non-pole for pole, he embattles by moving back as move forward. He adopts the natural method to refine his art, and brings real feelings into his art, and also resorts to the classics and read extensively about various methods.

  张桂铭终于在早期被动模写对象的圈圈里挣扎出来,反其道而走向目下的极端,此可视作他对于本体之质的一种可贵觉醒和昂扬。如是他方能看山不是山看水不是水的“心象”之境。他只将荷花、茶花、葫芦、石榴、秋叶、芭蕉、樱桃、游鱼、鸟凫之属,当成他的盛酒之器,在里面倾倒他自己的情愫,照自己的容颜,而不许别人的胡子眉毛来乱生乱长了。

  Zhang Guiming finally jumps out the situation of passively imitation, and takes the opposite path, which can be seen as his awakening and high-spirit. So he can achieve the standard to his heart content when he sees mountain not as mountain, sees water not as water. He just takes water lily, camellia, bottle gourd, autumn leaf, fish etc as his wine bottle, to which he can pour his feelings, and by which he can see himself, not allowing other’s eyebrows and beards to grow there.
