张桂铭毕业于浙江美术学院，扎实的传统功底为他的创新奠定了深厚的基础。也许他认为构图上洋味较浓，因而在笔墨上刻意追求十足的中国味，用笔奔放、凝重，使得粗细、干湿、枯润交相辉映。他的用墨更独具一格，一笔下去，焦墨、淡墨同时落纸，焦墨笔痕清晰，淡墨从焦墨两侧渗出优雅的墨晕，有一种水印木刻的韵味，就这笔墨足以沁透出江南画风的魅力。色彩的艳丽更使得张桂铭的画引人注目。他采用民间艺术填彩的方法，但不刻板，时时露出他的狡黠。《盛夏》中的荷叶时以蓝、浅青、淡绿等同类色交错填入，偶尔露出几块空白，看似漫不经心，实是惨淡经营，造成一种轻灵剔透的镶嵌效果;而在荷花上只是用淡红色沿上部轮廓轻轻一勾;却将整只莲蓬涂满绿色。简简单单的几种不同的设色方法，足见画家的灵气所在。
