桂铭采用的是空勾填色,是最为古老的传统方法;他所填之色彩瑰丽厚实,所勾之线条则粗细枯湿随机变化,其貌似大俗而又大雅,与古法迥异。其画即由是而幻出奇诡,若天雨花之落英缤纷;曾有人戏之曰“万花筒”,有人喻之为古教教堂那神幻的玻璃花纹。桂铭闻之,只是笑笑而已,仍乃自探索不已。
他那般横空出世的新颖画风,被圈内人士一度视为天外奇想。程十发曾为之题诗云:“外星艺术闪奇光。”此一新奇的评价,若撇去那“外”字的异国风味,倒也反映出其画风之卓异不凡:它既超越了画坛芸芸众生之凡俗,而又自具质实之中闪烁灵光的魅力。

Guiming uses an empty hook for coloring, which is the most traditional way. The colors he paints are very bright and thick; the lines he draws change its thickness accordingly to the occasion, which seem to be coarse but actually are very elegant, different from the traditional method. His paintings are fantastic, just like dropping rain from the sky. Once his painting had been said as "Kaleidoscope” by someone. And others compare his works to magic glass window patterns of the ancient churches. Hearing all of these, he just smiles and continues to explore on his way.
His new style had been regarded as vagary by the professional painters within this circle. Cheng Shifa once commented "the extraordinary light of the alien art.” Omitting the word alien, it also reflects the extraordinary style of him: It goes beyond the mundane works of many painters within this circle, and it owes its own flickering quality and charm.
张桂铭的艺术转折是在开放的年代,而且是在上海出现的。这也就是说,适合的气候和土壤,是生长艺术繁花异卉的两个必不可少的前提。

The transformation of Zhang Guiming’s art begins in a rather open time and in an open place Shanghai. That is to say the appropriate ground and climate are the essential prerequisites for beautiful blossoms of art.
张桂铭画得很好,他十分重视自己的感受,他的画是每次不同的感受创造出来的,只求效果,不择手段。即择一切手段发挥了传统笔墨的柔和细腻,又打出了叛逆的师承,用最大的勇气,达艺术之通途。

Zhang Guiming’s paintings are really very good. He attaches much importance to his own feelings, and his paintings are created by his different feelings. He cares about more about the effects than the methods. So he adopts a best way that can make best use of the gentleness and exquisiteness of traditional painting but also revolts against it. He takes the most courage for the thoroughness of art.
