Inner Light
In the year 2007, Zheng Shuang held her solo exhibition entitled Where There Is No Winter at The China National Museum of Fine Art. Here in Guangzhou, winter certainly exists. In fact, it is often noisy, crowded and occasionally hazy and damp. Yet artists are always quite skilled at creating a piece of land of their own, and so when there is light from within, everything else brightens up. Zheng Shuang loves sunshine and light fulfills her life. She loves flowers and so they bloom in plenty. She also loves cats, so she surrounds with 8 lovely kittens. One can easily feel the warmth and tranquility of her works, reflecting the sincerity of the artist herself.
Born into one of China's most prominent families, the last imperial family of the Qing Dynasty, Zheng Shuang has experienced perhaps the most significant transformations and changes of our times. Still, her optimistic and sincere attitude towards the society and life has not changed. And she paints as she always has -- truthfully and wholeheartedly.
After 10 years of study at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, in 1963, Zheng Shuang bid farewell to her caring teachers, which included Li Hua, Gu Yuan and Huang Yongyu. She travelled south, settled down in Guangzhou and spent 50 years here, the most vigorous time of her life. Guangzhou and the Academy are grateful to have such a talented artist and so is Zheng Shuang, for being part of China's first open window to the outside world, and for being able to embrace all the possiblities in creating this piece of land of her own; a piece of land both beautiful and full of sunshine, as it is in her heart.
