Sun Jiapei, a Chinese painter in Japan, will hold a solo exhibition in his hometown Shanghai. It is both exciting and difficult for the painter. As a wanderer left twenty years ago, the longer he was far from hometown, the more intense emotions he had. Although he had held many solo exhibitions in Japan, he treated this matter in Shanghai very carefully. The theme of solo exhibition is named as "Waterside Lyrical World" , because he was born and grew up in China's river district, where left him an indelible memory of warm family, happy childhood. The painter has paid closely attention to this world which exists in reality, but also in his heart. Sun Jiapei returned to hometown with his paintings for China's river district, in another words, he brought back one unique waterside world in his mind.
In the "Waterside Lyrical World" , the painter focused on water and light. Water is a key symbol for him combined with a strong hometown feelings. When he was young, he once lived in his grandmother and aunt's home, Changshu. In his memory, life in river district was full of funny, such as fishy mist in morning, evaporation from river in midday, golden twilight floating down the river. All these memories were drawn in his paintings with techniques of pointing, filling, painting and writing, just like antique were carefully collected up. The painter Sun Jiapei is more like an experienced photographer, especially good at using backlight technique in capturing a shot of the scenery. Perhaps he thought he could express the bright and power of the light by contrast of the shadow.
I initially thought that Sun Jiapei used the European Impressionism techniques when I first met his painting landscape works because of strong sunlight and bright colors, especially in view of the works depicting Venice Roadway. In those paintings, waterfront building was in golden sunshine, and the river was sparkling in the alley reflected the blue sky. When I appreciated them carefully, however, I found that Sun Jiapei was actually close to approach of classical realism instead of impressionism. He focused on the showing of strong contrast between light and dark, the describing of old house's space, water's light flow, and the sense of color inherent in the scene.
In Sun Jiapei's paintings, he paid a great deal of attention on the form of landscape rather than focused only on the color. Of course, Sun absorbed some techniques of impressionism, particularly was deeply interested in the expression of "water and light". But he turned the scientific method of impressionism on "light and color" into a narrative description of "water and light". From this point of view, he has developed his own creative style of landscape painting. From "color" to "light", there are actually overall changes in painting techniques. That means, Sun Jiapei's pursuit is to wake up the glorious memory of hometown full of ideal emotions instead of the true describing of wonderful color of natural scenery in the sun.
The audience could easily lead to some kind of misreading of Sun Jiapei's paintings in which there is a delicate realist style in his works, in other words, people may think that he paints those scenes based on the photoes. Actually, many landscapes in his works are hard to find in real life. Sun Jiapei said that his scenery always erupted from his heart, not a factual description of the real scene. When one is different state of mind, landscape painting will make difference. This may be called the border born in heart, and heart changing environment. Furthermore, we can also say that they are virtual landscapes in his paintings. No matter how realistic they look, there is a fascinating imagination in those scenes. This may be the most fundamental characteristics of Sun Jiapei's paintings.
There is a basic tone which constituted by the charm of quiet, calm and tranquility in Sun Jiapei's paintings. Bridges, empty villages and boats in his paintings showed entirely tranquility and peace. The scenery may bring people to a warm and calm dreamland. Lived in Japan for a long time, Sun Jiapei understood "lonely beauty" in Japanese painting deeply, but the tranquil charm in his painting is full of Chinese taste. Just as a later renowned art critic said: "In his works, people could feel the poetic and taste of oriental art." The quiet beauty of Chinese is different from that of Japan, for Sun Jiapei, his dream has always been wandering in hometown.
When someone came to another Shanghai artist, Chen Yifei, he said, "Chen also described his favorite theme – Chinese river district, with preferences of the oldest traditional Chinese subject matter with the oldest traditional western technique" . Indeed, this theme always has strong attractions for painters, especially for Shanghai's painter. Artists praise and recall it in variety of ways forever. Sun Jiapei has presented his deep and sincere emotions in those landscape works, which is seemingly ordinary to us.
