The Bamboos Courtyard
In Xingtai, Hebei, beside the Da Huo Quan Park, there's a small courtyard about almost 200㎡. Inside although it can't be seen many rare flowers, it's full of asparagus. Mimosas and aglaia odoratas grow happily instead of peonies. There's no camphorwood and machilus, but slender bamboos touch sky, on which swallows jump and dance now and then. Sometimes you can also see magpies find food in the courtyard. What a comfortable scene! This is where Chen Wei lives----a bamboos courtyard.
Wei Zi is not keen on social activities, but she loves reading and painting very much. She always stays under the bamboos sitting on the stone bench, with a thread-bound book in hand and enjoying it quietly, when there's tender wind blowing the bamboos, whose shadow is projected on the wall.
Books Collection
Wei Zi has been collecting rather abundant books. On the elegant and clear bookcase or book table put the thread-bound and hardcover books of Confucian classics, history, philosophy and literatures like, Zhou Yi Annotations, The Analects of Confucius, Tao Te Ching, The Historical Records, Chuang Tzu, Xuncius, The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons, Shi Shuo Xin Yu, Collections of Tai-pai Lee and so on. Even you can see Chinese Classical Aesthetics, Chinese Art Collection, Collection of Seal Cutting and Han Dynasty Paintings Collection, etc. Wei Zi regards them so precious that she purchased them at a very high price without hesitation though.
Don't you think it's just a decoration, because you can hardly imagine how hard she works on them! In the mornings and at nights, she always reads them over and over again, trying to figure out every wonderful detail among them.
Reading Copies in the Salon
If you have ever seen how Wei Zi reads copies (models of calligraphy for practice), you will not be surprised at her great vigor. In order to perfect herself and cherish her born imposing spirit, she took her teacher's suggestion, which led her to magnify every single Chinese character of Yan Zhenqing's Praise for Dongfang Shuo's Paintings to a Chinese feet square in black&white, then she posted them up on the every area of the wall of the salon. Whoever has seen it will have to admire the majestic appearance of Yan-style Chinese character, and will also be amazed at the posts layout on the wall. Indeed, with her original great ambition, plus that she's immersed in such an environment, there's no wonder that she would become what she looks like now.
Interest for Chinese Opera
Chen Wei's passion for Chinese Opera is absolutely not less than that for painting. Yes, in order to listen to the famous actors' ways of singing of Cheng-style, Mei-style and Zhang-style, she never hesitates to spend several hundred yuan for viewing and enjoying the live concerts in National Grand Theatre. In order to comprehend the way they sounded like Li Shiji, Mei Baojiu and Wang Rongrong, she plays the disks and listens to the audios as often as she can.
Maybe it's the talent she owns that makes her study them well easily such as Henan Opera, Lv Opera, Huangmei Opera and Pingju, etc. Especially when she sings one of the Peking Operas Suo Lin Nang:"Chun qiu tingwai fengyubao, hechu beisheng po jiliao?……" The soft and mellow voice often makes the audience hold their breath and give her big applauses.
If you have the chance to hear it someday, that must be an enjoyment.
Conversation in Yellow Pavilion
One day, Chen Wei invited her teacher Li Qingzhou to the Beijing's Air Force Hostel Yellow Pavilion for talking about paintings and arts. After hours of conversation, when they talked about the modern direction of painting and the contemporary popular fashion, Wei Zi asked about her development direction sincerely. Through the analysis about her characteristics, knowledge, present qualities of literature and the assumption of her development, Qingzhou suggested that she should pursue the mountain's mood, mountain's look and mountain's literary look. Wei Zi didn't understand, and her teacher told her:"Like mountains, like mountains, still like mountains.". Wei Zi asked :"If it's that all echoes to the mountains?" The teacher smiled while Wei Zi got lost in thought for a long time, and then nodded with tears.
Painting like a Man
In the year 2008, the Society of Cultural Digestion held an exhibition of Chinese paintings in Xingtai. The exhibition caused a wide sensation and resonance among not only the constant stream of audience but also the cultural field of the whole city. Among those works, Chen Wei's huge-sized excellent paintings, of which the exquisite skills, the elegant taste of ink and the majestic vigor left people a fresh impression. It's like a huge magnet that attracts every audience's eyes and grasps everyone's heart to the quiet and beautiful land. What's more surprising is these amazing works should be created by a woman, which makes people doubt but admire.
No wonder that on the guest book of the exhibition, someone commented that "A little woman should create the art works like a man. Gully of thousands, empty but majestic."
