艺术为何——简述我的艺术观

What is art?

(To sketch My Outlook on Arts)

 

这个题目的意思像是有点故弄玄虚。是的,因为艺术的确是个又玄又虚的东西,各种观点莫衷一是:有说艺术即摹仿的,有说艺术即形式的。有说艺术即观念的,还有说艺术本不存在,只有艺术家。

The title seems a bit mystifying. Indeed, as art is, in a way, mystification. There is no consensus on art: some say art is imitation, or formalization, while others say it is concept and the rest say art doesn’t exist but artists.   

 

列位看官瞧瞧:艺术到底是个什么东西?不同的观点代表不同的利益,因此矛盾与冲突几乎变的不可调和,如果不换个思路,这些纷争就会持续不断且无理可言。这种基于进化论和现象学之上的观念催生了现代形式主义和观念艺术,也将艺术和非艺术乃至艺术与生活的界限抹掉了。

All of you present check it out: what on earth is art? Different view represents different interest; hence contradiction and conflict is becoming incompatible. If we don’t change our mentality, these disputes will continue and become worse. These concepts based on Theory of Evolution and Phenomenology brought out Modern Formalism and Conceptual Art, as well as erased the boundary between art and non-art, and between art and life.    

 

 

所以,人人都是艺术家了。没有人是艺术家,也没有人不是艺术家了。这样好吗?这样不对吗?其实是不能用对错好坏来衡量艺术的。社会在发展,关于艺术的定义也在变化,应该相信:无论是持何种立场,一切存在都是合理的。即便是现存品艺术,还是极耗力耗时的古典艺术。

As a result, everyone is an artist. Nobody is a real artist, and everybody is one. Is it good?  Is it right?  Actually, art can’t be judged by right or wrong. The society is developing and the definition of art is also changing. We shall all believe: no matter what view you possess, all existence is logical. No matter the existing artworks or classic ones which consumed a lot of time and energy.

 

我有个想法,一种和平相处共存共赢的想法。即:像动植物世界那样,各自遵循自己的生存法则,价值标准,行为模式以及由于遗传基因所决定的种性特质,诸如中国画的笔和墨,油画的色性与油性等等。既然有喜光和喜阴的植物,也有喜湿和喜旱的植物;既然有在水里生活的鱼类,也有在天上生活的鸟类,但令人费解的是人类却不懂这个道理。

I have an idea of peaceful co-exiting and co-winning, that is, like the world of flora and fauna. Each kind respects the law of co-exiting, standard of value, behavior model, and species’ properties which determined by genes. So do the brushes and ink of Chinese paintings! So do the pleochroism and oiliness of oil paintings!  Some plants like sun, and some prefer shade; some go for moist and some for dry. Fish live in water and birds fly in the sky. Well, what annoys me is that human doesn’t seem to get it.    

 

 

穷人的苦痛来至疾病和饥饿,这与动植物相似。而富人和温饱满足了的人,其苦痛的原因则是五花八门:有女羡慕男的,有矮羡慕高的,有胖羡慕瘦的,有厨师羡慕裁缝的,有职员羡慕领导的,有工人羡慕老板的,有农村羡慕城市的。于是,有不宜做母亲的成了妻子,不愿承担的成了领导,不爱教育的成了教授,不擅视觉的成了画家,不会打仗的成了军官,不能格斗的成了掌门。太乱了,不是吗?

The suffering of the poor comes from disease and hunger, which is similar to flora and fauna. While the rich and the ones who have enough to eat and wear have various agony.  Female envies male, the short admires the tall, the fat likes to be slim, and the chef adores the tailor. Moreover, the employees envy the employers, the workers admire the bosses, and the villagers adore the urban citizens.

As a result, women are reluctant to be mothers become wives, people are irresponsible become leaders, even worse people who hate education become professors. People who are not good at visual effects become artists, men who are unable to fight become officers, and people who can’t wrestle become masters. It’s a mess, isn’t it?

 

 

 我的建议仍然是像动植物学习:不羡慕他人,不变成他人,只长成自己。你如果是一棵葱,那就长成葱好了,如果你是棵蒜,那就变成蒜吧。当然,葱蒜要是没人要咋办?葱见蒜卖的好,就装蒜,并成了蒜。

My advice is still to learn from the flora and fauna. We do not admire others, nor become them. We are just to be ourselves. If you are an onion, be one. If you are garlic, then become garlic. Well, what shall we do if no one wants the onion or the garlic? As a saying goes: the onion sees the garlic selling well, and pretends to be one garlic, hence “an onion becomes a garlic”.  

 

有点名人情结的人都应该熟悉某些名人的自传:说是打小就喜欢画画,想着有朝一日要成为一个大画家。但是当他发现画画已经落伍了,便毅然改弦易辙,并成功地像葱变成蒜一样,由画家变成了艺术家,并决然的和画家划清界限。我太佩服这样的人了,我相信他先前喜欢画画一定是出至于本性,而后改姓艺术应该是为了功名。这种近于自宫的行为本应该令人震撼,但是当今的人们却习以为常了。

People who have love knots to celebrity should be familiar with one celebrity’s autobiography. The autobiography says who loved painting started from a child and dreamed to be a famous painter. When he found out painting falling behind the trend, he changed the tune just like how the onion pretended to be the garlic. He became an “artist” instead of a painter and also drew a clear line from painters. I really “admire” this kind of person. I believe he loved painting from his nature, but became some kind of artist maybe just for the fame and honor. It’s shocking, similar to “self-castration”, but the public is used to it.   

 

 

我讨厌贬低绘画的人,也可怜某些以传统继承者自居而盲目排斥当代和现代艺术的人,尤为令人生厌的是,一些人不思进取,拾人牙慧,却沾沾自喜。

I disgust the ones who belittle the artists. I sympathize those who claim they are traditional successors and blindly reject contemporary and modern arts. The worst scenario is some people are so complacent. They make no attempt to make progress and just pick up phrases from others and show them off as their own.

  

我扪心自问:我是更喜欢艺术呢还是更喜欢钱?我的回答是:更喜欢钱和名。又问:是更喜欢钱和名呢,还是更喜欢画画?我的回答是:更喜欢画画。我的意思是:只要不是虚伪到家的人,或者是让别人养着而衣食无忧的人都会喜欢钱和名,但是它们不是人活着的目的,最多是必不可少的条件。

I questioned myself: what do I like more, art or money? My answer was money and fame. I asked again: what do I like more, money, fame or painting? I loved   painting. What I mean is: if one is not hypocritical, or one has enough to eat and wear, it will love money and fame. But money and fame are not the only goals for life. At most they are essential.  

 

 

当我意识到我是一根葱:是一块画画的料时(此时大约是二零零五年)那时我决定重出江湖,用画笔和写字的钢笔去和唯钱是命与唯名是从的现象做斗争。于是公开点名挑战几位很有名的反绘画的艺评人,和办杂志(《非艺术》),写文章对艺术投机者口诛笔伐。

When I realized that I was an “onion”, meaning I’m good at painting (it was the year 2005) I decided to come out again. I used brushes and pens to fight against the phenomenon where people only pursued money and fame. I publicly challenged a few famous anti-art commenters, created magazine Non-Art, and wrote articles condemning both in speech and writing to the art speculators.

 

但是,我今天决定休兵了。为什么呢?正如前面所言,艺术就像动植物那样,都有权利生存,活得千姿百态,有什么不好呢?就如耶稣所说:让凯撒的归凯撒,神的归神。我既然相信绘画不会死亡,既然它合适于我这种葱,那就专注于让这个葱长的又绿又壮吧。至于蒜和白菜们,我衷心希望它们都活得很好,若大的林子,有各种鸟多么美好啊,行文至此,我忽然无比的开心了,绘画正在回归,其他艺术形式也会层出不穷,并永远存在下去,这样的艺术生态难道不是我们最盼望的吗?

However, I decided to truce. Why? Just like what I said earlier, art is like flora and fauna.  Everything has the right to live, and live colorfully. Isn’t it good?

Jesus once said: Caesar goes with Caesar, while God is with God. I believe painting will never die. Painting suits me, the “onion”. So let the onion grow strong and big. For “garlic and cabbage”, I also wish you grow well too. It’s nice in such a big forest there are various kinds of birds.

I feel very happy as I write. Painting is picking up and there will be emerging more forms of art. They will coexist forever. Isn’t the artistic ecology what we have expected long to see?  

 

以死为鉴,人生短暂,守无可守;以史为鉴,我当和死人比;活着的名气和地位都不一定算数,只有被世代惦记的死人才应该被在乎,所以,也许,我是一个投胎转世在当代的古典主义者呢,而且以我们的知识和记忆:历史上的大多数变革都是向后看或以复古的名誉。我的野心是努力在百年之后,成为一个伟大的死人。

Taking death as a mirror, life is short and hard to guard; taking history as a mirror, I have to compare with the death. The fame and status may not count when you are alive, only the death that are memorized by generations should be cared.

In a word, maybe, my reincarnation is a classicist in the modern society. Based on our knowledge and memory: most revolutions in history are in the name of “retro”, or going backwards.

My ambition is:I want to be a great dead-man after I’m gone.
