ShanghART Gallery is pleased to present Zhu Jia's solo exhibition "Paintings of the Everyday" in March 2020.
The exhibition presents the artist's recent paintings from 2017 to 2019, it also the first time to show these paintings to the public. The paintings depict the artist's experience and feelings in everyday life, present social situations - picnics, parties, dinners - in which friends, acquaintances, and people in the art world gather together. They take place in familiar settings such as the Barbican Estates in London; or in the garden of a friend's home; or a visit to the seaside in Spain. The figures are part of the artist's social circle and the scenes depicted are from real life. In each of the paintings, the artist, whether at the center or the edge, is pictured outside of the main narrative or action taking place. While the paintings have the grandeur and scale of history paintings, they present everyday activities of leisure, play and enjoyment, from the celebratory to the mundane. Made during a time when the artist was frequently travelling, living between different cities, these paintings become evidence of a solitary act, in which the artist was only dependent on a camera and his own paintbrush. They are not painted in a particular style or with an intention of depicting a grand narrative, rather they become a means to acknowledge one's place in the world, and the sometimes precarious state of occupying both the familiar and foreign; of being part of something, but not quite belonging.
