This week we will look at American animation and comics in television and movies. Matt Groening is the American animator who created The Simpsons. The popular TV series began as a short segment on a sketch show and later expanded into a half-hour sitcom. Over 600 episodes later, The Simpsons is the longest-running primetime-television series in United States history, and The Simpsons Movie, released worldwide in 2007 grossed over $527 million. Groening pitched the Simpsons as a dysfunctional family and gave the characters the names of his own family— except Bart. Bart is intentionally an anagram of “Brat.” The series has been so popular because of its sitcom style that centers on a family and their life in a typical American town, providing a satirical parody of the middle class American lifestyle. Because the series is animated, the characters do not age and the writers have more creativity in developing comical moments that would be difficult to represent in any other way. Why do you think The Simpsons cartoon has been so popular in America for so long?
