During the summer school break, American students are often encouraged to do a little summer reading. This month we will be exploring the lives and work of some of America’s fascinating authors. Benjamin Franklin, a statesman, scientist and inventor who helped found the United States, was also a famous author. Although he published a lively autobiography of his storied life, Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac, a compendium of useful information he interspersed with poems and pithy sayings, remains his most famous book. Its cultural impact has been so lasting that many English sayings quoted today—like “a penny saved is a penny earned”—actually originated in Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac, first published almost 300 years ago!
