我比较热衷于表现少数民族题材,也一直在很诚实地捕捉质朴、强悍的少数民族形象。我觉得少数民族的文化很不简单,我也很羡慕他们那样的生活。贵州少数民族不管生活怎样困苦,他们都照样唱歌、喝酒、跳舞、劳动,享受生活。我是站在他们的队伍中亲自去感受,融入其中进行创作的。

我在看不透大师的比例、结构时,也有困惑,但我看了一些大师,像一些有特点个性的,如米开朗基罗、安格尔,完全是为我所用的解剖,而非较真的解剖。他们的人体不是针灸穴位,不是无生命的标本。在历史上有影响力的大师都不是教条的。学院的东西总在干扰我,我在尽量排除,但有时还是不够彻底。

我非常喜欢朱光潜先生说的一句话:人生本是一场热闹戏。我觉得对一个艺术家而言,无论是用什么手法,无论我是用木头、石头或者其它任何材料创作,都是真切的表达我对世界,对于社会,对于人最真实的思考、感受和态度。因此对我来说对于人本身的关注就是艺术的初衷,也是艺术的根本。

雕塑在创作制作过程中,有一种引逗的力量,这就是我总是精力充沛地完成它。我非常喜爱这个事业,以往乘火车路经中原,去时一片汪洋,归时耕地干裂的像中国碎瓷图纹。但是那里的农民没有去理睬这样“法定”的灾荒。每年照常执着的将种子播下去,我欣赏他们的执着。

I appreciate ethnic minority subjects, and I have always captured these unaffected, valiant figures. Ethnic minority culture is far from simple, and I admire how they live. No matter how difficult their lives are, the ethnic minorities of Guizhou sing, drink, dance, and work, enjoying life. I stood among them and personally experienced all of this, incorporating it into my work.

When I can't understand a master's proportions or structures, I may be confused, but then I see the work of a few other artists, such as Michelangelo and Ingres, works with character and personality. They have their own modes of dissection that are not really related to anatomy; these bodies are not acupuncture models or lifeless specimens. The influential masters of history were not dogmatic; academic rules have always bothered me, and I try to disregard them, but sometimes I don't go far enough.

I really like something Zhu Guangqian once said: "Life is a lively play." As an artist, regardless of the methods I use, my materials, whether wood, stone, or something else, all vividly express my thoughts, feelings, and attitudes about the world, society, and humanity. For me, a focus on people is the original intention and essence of art.

In the creative process, sculpture has the power to entrance, which always gives me energy. I very much like this part of the medium. I often took trains across the Central Plains. When I set out, I saw a vast expanse, and when I returned, the fields were dry, with a pattern like Chinese crackleware. However, the farmers there did not pay attention to this ‘technical' drought. Every year, they planted their seeds as usual, and I admire their perseverance.
