Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ September Asian Works of Art auction, to be held on the 21st and 22nddays of the month, will feature several exceptional objects from private American collections and estates, including the Estate of Frank G. Mertes, Sr. of Winona, Minnesota, the heir to the assets of J.R. Watkins; the Estate of Joan Peters Caro of Chicago; and the Estate of John Timothy Harrington of Milwaukee, Wisonsin. The auction, comprising mostly Chinese Works of Art, will also feature Korean, Japanese and Southeast Asian objects.
Highlights include an ink and color painting on silk by Shen Quan (1682-1760) dating to 1752 [the Estate of John Timothy Harrington], depicting a pair of pheasants perched on a blossoming peony branch; a 19th Century silk Kesi panel from a private collection, depicting Daoist immortals and other deities within a garden terrace; a Tang Dynasty Sancai glazed pottery figure of a Camel accompanied by an Oxford Thermoluminescence Analysis Report; two Japanese silver articulated models of insects to be offered separately [the Estate of Frank G. Mertes], including a praying mantis by Takase Kozan and a grasshopper; and an 18 karat gold and jadeite necklace [the Estate of Joan Peters Caro] with 18 plaques of varying size, decoration and color.
In addition, the sale includes several objects from various media including jade carvings, scholar’s objects, Qing dynasty porcelain, early ceramics, bronze figures and vessels, Japanese woodblocks, Tibetan Thangkas, jewelry, silk textiles, Chinese paintings, furniture, lacquerwares, collections of books and auction catalogues, and over 80 snuff bottles.
The deadline for registration will be 4pm CT on September 20.
Please be advised that all bidders will be required to provide a valid government issued Photo ID, a proof of address, (2) telephone numbers and a valid credit card. In order to bid in the Asian Works of Art Sale 397, we will require that a $1,000 hold be placed on your credit card before the registration deadline. The $1,000 hold will immediately be removed from any unsuccessful bidders on Wednesday, September 23. If you are a successful high bidder, the $1,000 hold will be applied to the balance of your invoice. Upon conclusion of the sale, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will accept cash, money orders, and domestic checks. Credit cards will be accepted up to $10,000 per invoice, however, please note that a 3% convenience fee will be added to the total amount charged.
