Qi, sounds the same as the Chinese word for "air", but is different from air. Qi is an important concept of ancient oriental philosophy, refers to the fundamental source of creation and constitution of all worldly matters, and is the ancient understanding and interpretation of metaphysics of the universe and life beings. Therefore, Qi is believed to be the essence of all matters in the world, the comprehension of Qi can be seen as the course of the understanding, awakening and sublimation of life.
Ancient literati followed this philosophy, employed the concept of Qi to comprehend and express the complexity of the world, combined the ancient oriental philosophy about the origin of the universe to stippling, structure, composition and other aesthetic idea of Chinese character, allowing the pursuit of brushwork and style complement to each other, reflecting the integration between oriental philosophy and artistic realm, went beyond any representation directing to the essence of life. Among various kinds of calligraphy, cursive script is the most prominent. It separates from practicality, manages the change and balance between lines, structure and ink-rhyme, possesses incomparable artistic conception and altitude, and signifies the enduring concept of Qi from the east.
Zhang Zhaoda has never stopped pursuing the calligraphy art during his fifty years of life. Through calligraphy, Zhang Zhaoda is able to glimpse his own mind and soul, and connect with them via his calligraphy works. His cursive script is the expression of his broad philosophical dimensions as well as his ethereal state of mind. It is his ultimate pursuit of the meaning of life of the universe.
This exhibition presents four series of Zhang Zhaoda calligraphy art works of cursive scripts. The first three series are Poetry of Tang Dynasty, Ci of Song Dynasty, and poetries of Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasty. It is the praise of the heyday of Chinese poetry, and also the inheritance and integration between cursive scripts and poetry about spirit and artistic conception. The last series is the poem written by Zhang Zhaoda. His poetry shows his insightful thoughts from life phenomenon, as well as his pursuit of the ontology between life and universe. His calligraphy and poetry inherit the oriental philosophy as well as artistic thought, and contain the long-lasting Qi of the East.
