看王江扬的画

  他当过木工、造纸工、钳工、出纳、茶农、印染设计员、推销员、厂长,他还因错案坐过牢,就是没有进过专门的美术院校。然而1986年他却毅然抛掉了铁饭碗,成了一名自谋生路的专职画家。

  他从小喜欢雕和画,最后自己解放自己,实现了他的童年梦想。

  他非不学而能,而是自学而能。

  他唯奉真诚,对此有着宗教一般的虔诚。

  看多了刻意的追求,再看他那真挚的作品,实在让人惊喜;看多了没有多少内涵的新风格、新样式、新技法,再看他那自然、朴实、讲真话的作品,使人有耳目一新之感。

  他的画粗看相当古典而且老套,事实上他画的乡土风情却极具内在特色,尤其是他的乡土人物画。他的画表面看来象米勒(J.—F.Millet)或勃鲁盖尔(P.Rruegel),但深层的追求大异其趣。

  他的画在田园风格中深藏着许多可感不可说的现代隐喻,在对乡间纯朴人性的怀念中内含着现代人的某种疾痛。这疾痛起于对人的关怀和同情,这同情又起于自省,他画中的神秘底蕴有如平和下面的不安,在静穆、深层的躁动。

  在他的作品里看不到取巧、做作的笔触,但他那苦涩厚重的用笔又恰与他过沉的心灵对应。他可以到学院去进修油画材料处理的工艺技术,但很难靠学院去提高他所适应的画面效果,因为一般技巧未必与他特殊的人生感悟相吻合,他需要自我完善和创造。他可以借鉴画风天真、稚拙、生涩的名画经验,但他更多的是靠自我完善和创造。当一个取向独立的艺术家只能走自我创造和完善的路时,这个人往往是值得注意的。

  艺术由古典形态向现代形态的转化,有其必然的历史逻辑,但艺术家却不能根据艺术史的逻辑进行创作。在艺术多元发展的今天,当我们肯定某种选择时,却很难否定相反的选择。如果一个艺术家对现代社会影响是敏感的,并且站在了现代文化的高度完全可以使古典形态的艺术焕发出夺目的现代风采。王江扬在新潮美术涌起时步入画坛,却从相反方向向现代穿透,他由此为油画注入了新的活力。他与以传统观念表现西部风情的写实大潮完全不同,这不同就在于他的现代文化精神。

  他只要沿着自己的路坚持不懈地走下去,会有越来越多的人喜爱他的艺术,他将成为画坛的骄子。

  After Seeing Wang Jiangyang's paintings

  He used to be a carpenter,a papermaker,a bench worker,a cashier,a tea farmer,a dyeing and finishing designer,a salesman,and a factory manager. He had even been put into prison because of some mistake. With so rich experience,he is never a student of professional art colleges. However,he gave up his secure job in 1986 and turned into a professional painter who had to make a living on his own.

  He was fond of carving and painting when he was young,and finally liberated himself and realized his childhood dream.

  His capacity comes from self-study,not talent.

  He believes nothing but sincerity,and believes it as a follower of some religion.

  It's surprising to see his sincere works after seeing so many intended ones. It's also refreshing to see these natural,plain and true works after seeing those new styles,new patterns and new skills of no contents.

  His paintings look quite classic and cliché at the first sight,but are full of unique local features in fact,especially those local figure paintings. Judging from the appearance,his paintings are similar to those of F.Millet or P.Rruegel,but have great difference in the deeper-level pursuit.

  There are many modern metaphors,which people can feel but not speak of,hidden in his idyllic paintings. In the memory of simple human nature,people can feel certain pain of modern people. This pain originates from the care and sympathy for people,while the sympathy comes from self-examination. The mysterious implication in his paintings is like the uneasiness under the peaceful appearance,moving in silence.

  We cannot find any tricky or feigned strokes from his paintings. His bitter and heavy strokes match perfectly with his calm heart. He could go to professional colleges to improve his skills in dealing with oil painting materials,but the picture effect that he is used to is hard to be improved through college study. Ordinary skills may not fit his special life experience,so he has to improve himself and be innovative. He could learn from masterpieces which have an artless,simple or obscure style,but he relies more on self-improvement and innovation. We should always pay attention to those independent artists who has no other path to go but the one leading to self-innovation and improvement.

  There is certain historical logic behind the transformation of art from classical form to modern one. However,artists cannot create their works by following the logic of art history. In a society where art is going through a diversified development,we feel it hard to deny an option when we agree with an opposite one. If an artist is sensitive to modern social influence and able to view the world from a modern cultural perspective,he/she can certainly extract brilliant modern charm from classical art forms. Wang Jiangyang entered into the painting world when modern art appeared,but he penetrated in the modern style from an opposite direction,thus filling oil paintings with new vitality. His style is completely different from the traditional realistic way of demonstrating the western places. The difference lies in his modern art spirit.

  More and more people will love his art as long as he insists in his path. He will become an outstanding artist of the painting world.
