The artist Chan Shing Kau has said of his paintings that they “do not exist in real life; they are in fact imaginations. . . . These paintings are often made by inscribing traces of unconscious effects on the paper, which lead me to the imaginary world of creation. . . . The decisive factor . . . is the mood at the moment of creating the painting.” In what mood was the artist when he painted Beginning of Dreams? A near-solid mass of black dominates the foreground, with stipples of ink appearing either to fold onto themselves or spray outward. Behind the mass a large, pale moon peeks through thick clouds. Was the artist forecasting hope or portending turmoil?
