At the end of the 19th century, the British Empire constantly invaded China and Tibet, and the currency and Indian rupees of the British colonies also circulated to Tibet and gradually infiltrated into Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. This situation extremely upset the local authorities of the Qing Dynasty. On November 29, the thirty-first year of Guangxu (1905), Xiliang, governor of Sichuan, played the court and proposed to cast the Chinese literature and silver dollar modeled on the Indian rupees to resist the Indian rupees and pay Tibetan rates. The Qing court attached great importance to its suggestions. On December 24, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Household issued an oracle. The Minister of Finance, following the decree, agreed to imitate the Indian Rupee coin in the Sichuan Silver Yuan Bureau, and put forward special requirements for the manufacturing process and application area. The front of the imitation silver coin adopts the side head of the Guangxu Emperor, and the words "made in Sichuan Province" on the back, surrounded by vine branches and flowers.Because the design pattern, diameter and weight of this coin are similar to the Indian rupee, therefore, the title of "Sichuan rupee" is adopted. Its face value is 1 rupees (about 30 mm diameter, weighing about 11.4 grams), 1 / 2 rupees (about 23.5 mm diameter, weighing about 5.8 grams), 1 / 4 rupees (about 19 mm diameter, weighing about 2.8 grams), combined qingping silver two cents, one cents and six cents and eight cents.
Sichuan Rupee, a new foreign silver currency, is the earliest and only circulating silver currency with the emperor's head in China, which has far-reaching historical significance. The front is the side head of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty with braids; the collar and no collar. On the back of the silver coin, the pattern is decorated by the branches and flowers of the Indian rupees. The four characters "made in Sichuan Province" in Chinese are arranged left, upper, right, and left, and the approximate rice-shaped flowers in the center are decorated with horizontal and vertical formats.
This collection is Guangxu silver coin made in Sichuan Province, the front of the Guangxu Emperor side portrait (the head of the Indian rupee), the back cast "made in Sichuan Province" four words, surrounded by flowers and plants, a horizontal flower or flowers in the center, the pattern is similar to the Indian rupee, and its weight and size are consistent with the Indian rupee.People call this new silver currency "Sichuan rupee", "Sichuan cast rupee" and so on.This new silver coin is the earliest figure image silver coin in China, and the only mechanism with an imperial portrait. With this currency and commercial folk music, the circulation scope of the Indian rupee was gradually narrowed. In the Chinese and British currency war, China won the final victory.
Guangxu, like Sichuan Province, played a special role in the modern Chinese history and played a special historical position in the Chinese silver coins.Sichuan Tibet and Ocean is not only a study of Tibetan history, but also an important evidence of the history of Tibetan and Han ethnic exchanges and Sino-foreign relations.Over time, the amount of this silver currency has been greatly reduced, and has been favored in the art collection world.
