19世纪末，英帝国势力不断侵入中国西藏地区，英属殖民地的货币印度卢比也随之流通到西藏并逐渐渗入川、滇等省，这种局面令清朝地方当局极度不安。光绪三十一年（1905年）11月29日，四川总督锡良上奏朝廷，提出铸造仿照印度卢比的汉文银元，用以抵制印度卢比并充发藏饷。清廷对其建议很是重视，12月24日财政处、户部奉谕议奏。主管财政处大臣奕励等遵旨议复锡良奏折后，同意在四川银元局仿造印度卢比式样铸造新式银币，并对制造工艺及行用地域提出了特别的要求。仿铸之银币正面采用光绪皇帝侧面头像，背面铸有“四川省造”字样，四周环绕蔓枝花卉纹饰。由于此币的设计模式及直径、重量等均与印度卢比相似，因而就有了“四川卢比”之称谓。其面值分别为1卢比（直径30毫米左右，重约11.4克）、1/2卢比（直径23.5毫米左右，重约5.8克）、1/4卢比（直径19毫米左右，重约2.8克），计合清库平银三钱二分、一钱六分和八分。

四川卢比这种洋为中用、富有特色的新式银币，是中国最早的也是唯一带有皇帝头像的流通银币，具有深远的历史意义。其正面为大清光绪皇帝的侧面头像，脑后垂有辫子；服饰衣领以有领、无领来区分。银币背面则依照印度卢比纹饰装饰环绕的蔓枝花卉图案，汉文“四川省造”四字呈上下右左排列，中心的近似米字形花饰有横、竖两种版式。

此藏品为光绪像四川省造银币，正面采用光绪皇帝的侧面半身肖像（印度卢比正面铸有英王头像），背面铸有“四川省造”四字，四周环绕花草纹饰，中央有一横花或立花，花纹与印度卢比相仿，其重量、大小均与印度卢比一致。人们将这种新式银币称之为“四川卢比”、“川铸卢比” 等。此种新式银币是我国最早的人物图像银币，也是唯一一种带有帝王肖像的机制银币。此币一出，商民乐用，从此印度卢比流通范围日益缩小，在这场中、英间的货币战争中，中国赢得了最终的胜利。

光绪像四川省造银币在我国近代史上发挥过特殊的作用，在中国银铸币中占有特殊的历史地位。四川藏洋不仅是研究藏族历史，也是研究藏汉民族交往史和中外关系史的重要佐证。随着时间的推移，此银币的存世量已大大减少，在艺术品收藏界中也一直备受青睐。
