I wrote my introduction of work in Chinese, and asked my friend to translate it into English.
Maybe it's a little difficult for some people to understand the Chinese traditional words or stories.
That's ok. Words here can help me to communicate my feelings and thoughts about ink and wash through digital method.
I hope you, the readers, would communicate with me, share the artistic space.
Heavenly Joy Comes Naturally and Leisurely
A bowl of clear water, serene and colorless, embraces a drop of ink and immediately forms a magnificent image. So virtual and free, fragile and dynamic, mystical and charming is the ink inside the water as I happily press the shutter that I am once again a child gathering beautiful rocks by the river, and losing my breath at the sight of a stunning rock picked up by chance.
I feel like I have been touched by the divine power. I obey that force which is beyond my control, submit to an authority larger than itself and pray to be embraced with this fascinating gift.
A splash of ink on the rice paper presents the freedom of motion of two dimensions, but it is as flat as the painting itself. However, splashing ink in the water forms a three-dimensional image, changing magically by the second. My camera captures the splotches of the ink in the wash with flowing threads and magical shapes that cannot be achieved on the rice paper. These naturally formed lines and shapes are beyond our painting skills as well as beyond our imagination. Moving harmoniously with nature and leisurely waiting for the holy kiss is all I desire.
Harmony of Reality and Illusion, Humanity and Nature
For me, to encounter these beautiful photographic ink and wash works is comparable to the way a sculptor admires a beautiful piece of jade in the rough. How can we add significance to an object already valuable? Only by sculpturing according to the individual characteristics of each piece of raw jade can we add real significance and soul to the object itself.
The concept and application of virtual art have become a real possibility due to the development of digital technology. With the photographic technique to freeze the image in one thousandth of a second and advanced artistic micro spraying technique, the ink and wash is smoothly revealed on the rice paper, bringing a wave of revolution to this major art form. The reality virtualized by the digital techniques will be part of our future lives and change our perception and way of life. It has already become a part of our cultural and economic life and it continues to impact our lives on every level.
These photographic ink and wash works from my digital experiments represent an unconventional way of photographing. Being different from the traditional way, the ink and wash is created by photographing integrated with the conventional art spirit. It’s a rebirth of photography and ink and wash painting, the mixed child of western modern technology and Chinese culture, young still but with great potential and possibilities. My scarce knowledge does not begin to make me aware of its potential, but my curiosity and hunger motivate me to explore, study, learn and discover.
How Far From Us
These are virtual and digital images of mountains and water, unreal, changeful, tranquil and mysterious. They lie alive in our hearts as a spiritual utopian home and remain like that forever. However back in the real world, even though images of mountain and water can also be full of imagination, change, peace and magic, our hearts are literally drifting away from them further and further…
